"Well?" Hayden waited.
Mine and Harry's eyes remained locked on each other, I knew he could see the panic I felt. He sighed not just verbally but emotionally. Without looking I felt his fingers brush over my hand before latching on.
"So you going to tell me or not?" Hayden wined puffing up his shoulders, trying to make himself look more intimating.
"Okay okay" Harry cried, giving my hand a little squeeze. What was he going to do?
"This is what happened" he started. My heart sunk. I held my breath.
Harry continued, "We killed him. We killed the man that assaulted Lucy". Hayden's face dropped at first although it hadn't taken me long to realise Harry was trying to scare him. "He got in the way of our relationship so we ended his life" he said slowly, Harry was a better actor than I'd thought. I bit my lip trying to hold back a nervous laugh.
"That's a lie" Hayden cursed, "you couldn't hurt a fly".
"I killed someone Hayden" Harry said, his face straight and emotionless.
"I-er, If you're not going to tell me the real reason I'll tell them you know" Hayden stuttered, it was the first time I'd ever seen him so speechless. "I'll tell all your friends you're keeping secrets from them and they'll hate you".
I couldn't hold back my laugh any longer, I burst out laughing then covered my mouth with a gasp. Harry's eyes became wide with fear.
"See" Hayden spat "I thought we were friends mate but now I'm going to ruin you and that SLUT too".
Harry shot forward before I could hold him back, grabbing Hayden by the neck and pinning him against the wall. "This is non of your bloody business and if I ever, EVER hear you call my girlfriend that again I will not only ruin you but your face as well" he threatened, his long fingers tightening around Hayden's defenceless wind pipe.
With that, Harry throw him at the floor and turned back to me. I knew Harry wasn't the sort of person to pick fights but when it came to me he'd do anything to protect me. I felt safe with him around, like he was my bodyguard as well as being my best friend and boyfriend and at that moment I fell even more in love with him.
He took me under his arm and walked us away from where he'd left Hayden more than shaken up. No words were spoken until we'd reached at least 10 metres away. That's when I started to speak gently, "Thank you Harry".
He smiled at me with one of those melting smirks. One of those heart stopping, knee weakening smirks, "you don't need to thank me baby, it's my duty to look after you" he blushed.
Then he stopped, his face tightened and his grin soon became a frown. "Ever since that night, your birthday, I sworn to myself that I'd never let anyone hurt you because when I stand up for you it kind of feels like I'm making up for that one night, even though I'll never be able to change it" he said, his eyes were watery and I felt him shaking with anger.
"Please don't blame yourself Harry!" I spoke quickly "it wasn't your fault and it never will be".
"But I wasn't there for you when you needed me the most" he moaned. Drops of rain started landing on our cheeks and running down our faces. Heavier and heavier every time until it was teaming.
"What matters is that you're here now because I need you now more than ever" I cried as another rain drop crashed against my face.
"I love you so much Lucy" he said pulling me into his chest. "I love you more" I mumbled, squeezing him.
