The school day passed by in a whirl of hugs and goodbyes. At lunch, Dean sat with Cass, Sam and Gabe, and tried to forget that everything comes to an end. They chattered about nothing in particular all the way through gym, (except Cass could now say with confidence that Dean's abs were hot.) and touch football turned into heated tackles when the teacher wasn't around. Everything was so much easier now that they were in a relationship. For example, one of the football players saw him hug Cass, and said "You gay, bro? That's disgusting, man." And Dean replied "Yeah, I am gay. Do we have a problem?" And kissed Cass right there in front of everyone.
They would figure things out later, for now, they were just two gay dudes about to do a Shakespeare presentation.
English class finally rolled around and Cass was so happy to finally present that Dean couldn't help but be excited, too. What? Cass is cute when he's happy, warm smile and dimples that could light up the world.
They head into English class and put everything they have into that one presentation. Cass even does a little dancing. (Don't ask) and as Dean reads the slides comparing Hamlet to Othello, he can't help but imagine having a normal life like this. Living in one town his whole life, going to elementary and high school with the same group of friends, meeting someone like Cass and starting a family with him. No monsters, no decisions that tear your life apart, just Cass and Dean, Dean and Cass.
He's so lost in thought, he forgets he's presenting and stops abruptly in the middle of a slide.
Then Cass clears his throat, nudges Dean and brings him back to the present. They finish their presentation, and everyone claps. When the next group starts to present, they quietly slip out the door and into the parking lot.
"Are you sure you want to take me to Meg's house? What about Sam and Gabe?" Cass asks Dean, not wanting to pressure him into anything.
"It's fine, Cass. I'm doing it. And I already texted Sam, he and Gabe are walking home." Dean replies, starting the Impala.
They make their way to the run down Motel and Cass knocks tentatively on the door to room 617. Dean stands awkwardly at his side. "Do you want me to wait in the car, or..?"
"No, stay here. I want her to meet you."
The door opens and a sleepy Meg stands before them, in only a black nightgown and bunny slippers.
"Cass, you came!" Her face lights up, then crashes as she sees Dean. "Who is this?"
"Um... Meg, meet Dean. Dean, this is Meg."
"Oh. I see you must not have chosen me, then." She said with a crestfallen smile. "So this is the famous Dean Winchester, huh?" She circled Dean slowly, poking his stomach and peering at every inch of his body. He'd never felt so uncomfortable.
"You better be good enough for my Cassie. You nearly broke his heart before, and if you do that again, I won't be there to patch him up." She said, watching him closely.
"Cheating on him was the worst mistake of my life."
"So why'd you do it?"
"Meg!" Cass protested.
"I-it's complicated."
"That's what I thought." She sighs and turns to Cass. "It wouldn't have worked out between us, anyway. But it sure would've been nice to try."
"I hope we'll see each other again." Cass says softly.
"I-I can't do this, Cass. It would be better if we never saw each other again." She shuts the door, leaving a confused Dean and heartbroken Cass.
"She-she never even said goodbye." Cass sniffles, and Dean leads him to the car with his arm around Cass's shoulders.
"We never should have come" Cass says, slipping into the car and resting on Dean. "I should have known. She doesn't do goodbyes well."
"Shh, Cass, it's her life. You worry about you, not her. You have to move on."
"I know, Dean."
Dean starts the car, and they drive around aimlessly for a couple hours trying to work out how they're going to see each other again.
"You could visit on the holidays?"
"I don't know where I'll be each Christmas, and my dad doesn't like serious relationships." Dean groans. "Cass, I love you, and I really want to make this work, but with me hunting and you moving every year, how can we?"
"What if... I left my family? You could teach me how to hunt."
"What? Cass, no. I would never ask you to do that. And I can't have you get hurt trying to hunt with me. I can't hurt you anymore."
"I never felt like I fit in, anyway. And I'll hurt even more without you. You complete me, Dean."
"You would do that for me?"
"I would do anything for you."
Dean captured Cass's face for a passionate kiss, but pulled away.
"What about Gabe? And would your mom be okay with it?"
"Gabe would come for Sam. He doesn't really like our family, either. And even though my mom loves us, moving constantly has taken its toll on her. She's stressed all the time, and super religious, and she likes our older brothers more than us."
"I didn't want to have to make you choose between me and your family."
"Dean, it's okay. This is what I want to do. Will your dad be okay with it?"
"I'll make him be okay with it. If you want to come, you're coming." He grins and reaches up to fluff Cass's hair. They drive to Cass's house so Cass could pack a bag of his most prized possessions (he joked that he wouldn't pack anything because he couldn't pack Dean) and say goodbye to his parents.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Dean asked Cass for the 40th time. "Don't feel like just because monsters exist, you have to fight them."
"I want to be with you forever, Dean. Kicking monster ass is just a happy side effect. Nothing can tear us apart. Not monsters, not jealous ex girlfriends and certainly not overprotective parents. I'm going in."
"This time, I'm definitely waiting outside." Dean sobers. "This is one conversation you have to have by yourself."
"I'll be right out, I promise."
"Take as long as you need, buddy."
With a quick kiss, Cass disappears into his house and Dean stands alone.
