Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox. Foxspirits are a common subject of Japanese folklore; in English, kitsune refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing abilities that increase with their age and wisdom.
While some folk-tales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.
In digital photographs and to those with enhanced vision (see above picture), the Kitsune has a distinctive and fiery aura.
It is shaped like a fox with large pointed ears and muzzle.
Derek Hale notes that this effect is visible on young Kitsune, Kira because they "haven't learned to conceal" their true nature.
Kira's eyes changes to an orange glow when she is absorbing electricity or sometimes in the middle of a fight.
There are 13 types of kitsune.
Only five have been named within the context of the show.
They are: Celestial, Wind, Ocean, Thunder and Nogitsune or (Void).
Kira Yukimura is a "Thunder Kitsune".
Described as a "dark kitsune" the nogitsune possesses the body of an individual for no other purpose than to create chaos on which it then feeds.
