In Navajo culture, a skin-walker is a person who has the ability to turn into an animal, or to disguise themselves as an animal(s). Skinwalkers differ from werewolves because these shape shifters have the ability to control where and when they transform. Skinwalkers are known as evil creatures, usually taking revenge on a certain person or family.

In some Native American legends, a skin-walker is a person with the supernatural ability to turn into any animal he or she desires, though they first must be wearing a pelt of the animal, to be able to transform.

Most sources describe the Navajo skinwalker as evil due to the rituals necessary to attain the power. Some believe skinwalkers walk freely among tribes and secretly transform under the cover of night.

In the Navajo language, the word literally means "goes on all fours"-just like most animals.
