"Mean Girls" I chuckle. Ava shouts "YESS" while skipping up the stairs to my room, dragging her belongings behind her. I walk into my room and see her shoving the disc into the DVD player, humming the tune to a familiar song that I recognise as One Direction's song One Thing.
She pointed to my bed and told me to set up the blankets while we waited for the movie to start playing. Ava pulls a huge can of Pringles and a bottle of pepsi out of her duffle bag, and lays them in front of us on the bed. We snuggle up in the duvet while the movie starts. The whole time Ava makes pointless comments, constantly causing me to giggle. "Stop!" I laugh as she pokes my side, chuckling to herself as I squirm and knock over the Pepsi, spilling it all over my bed.
"AVA!" I scream, looking at her straight in the eyes. I put on my best 'I'm really mad at you right now so you should probably run' face. I see her look up at me with apologetic eyes. "I-um Millie- I, uh didn't mean to-" I cut her off by bursting out into laughter. She slowly realises I was kidding, and starts to quietly laugh along too.
"The movie's over, we need to clean this place up" I say, waving my hand around my now completely cluttered room. I pick up the duvet, still wet and sticky from the Pepsi incident, and drag it downstairs into the laundry room.
I walk back into my room and hear Ava not-so-pleasantly 'singing' along to her iPod, which is blasting What Makes You Beautiful, while picking up Pringles crumbs from off of the floor.
"Everyone else in the room can see it!" She screams, "everyone else but YOUUUU" she points her fingers at me when she sings that last word. I chuckle and start to sing along. Ava is a huge fan of One Direction. I like them, their music is pretty good, but I wouldn't say I'm as obsessed as Ava. She literally has life size cut-outs of the boys in her room. In case you hadn't guessed, she's kind of strange.
We finished cleaning up my room, and we were heading downstairs to the kitchen to grab some dinner, when I bumped into my aunt Katie. "Millie!" She beams at me, "I have some news!" She smiles at Ava and I. Aunt Katie and Ava get along great. She's here almost every other day, since her parents are pretty much always working.
"What is it?" I ask raising an eyebrow at my excited aunt. "So you know how Brian goes on business trips sometimes?" She asks. I nod my head, a very confused look on my face. "Well your uncle has been told he needs to go to Florida for the whole summer." She says. My face falls. The whole summer? Why does aunt Katie look so happy? I glance over at Ava, and she's wearing the same puzzled face I am.
"That's a long time, Aunt Katie," I begin, "why do you look so happy?" My aunt begins squealing and smiling even more than she was before. I swear, sometimes this woman acts more like a 16 year old girl rather that a 43 year old woman. "Cause we're going too!" She exclaims. My mouth falls right open, and this just gets my aunt even more excited. Florida. We're going to Florida. We're going to Florida for the WHOLE SUMMER! I squeal and hug my aunt, muttering thanks as she hugs me back.
I step back, and look at Ava. She has a small smile on her face, but I can see the sadness in her eyes. Then it hits me. I'm going to be leaving Ava alone all summer. I know her parents aren't going to be home with her very much, so it'll just be her in her big house. I frown, and start to fiddle with my hair. I look back over to my aunt and see her still grinning.
"But what about Ava?" I say quietly, wrapping my arm around my friend's shoulders. I watch as my aunt starts bouncing on her feet excitedly. I think she may have had a bit too much coffee. Just a bit.
"Well?" I say louder, looking at Ava, who has tears collecting in her waterline. I look back at Katie who disappeared. She comes back a minute later with 4 plane tickets in her hands. One for me, one for her, one for uncle Brian. And one left.
"OH MY GOD!" I scream, "Aunt Katie you better tell me that extra ticket is for Ava!" I jump up and down on the spot, a huge smile spreading across my face. I look at Ava, and she has an anxious look on hers. I look back at my aunt, and she nods her head. I stop, turn to Ava in silence, stunned. A whole summer in Florida. WITH MY BEST FRIEND.
Ava and I both start simultaneously jumping up and down and screaming, holding each others hands and dancing around the kitchen. We run up to my aunt, both of up wrapping our arms around her. I hear Ava whisper, "Thank you, thank you, thank you" into my aunts ear.
She pulls away from us, and hands Ava a phone.
"I know you girls are very exited, but we need to ask Ava's parents first. I'm not too sure how they will feel leaving her with us for 3 months" she says, and winks before she walks away.Ava dials her mom's number while walking away into another room. I sit on the kitchen counter and go over what just happened in my head. I can't stop smiling at the thought of Ava and eye sharing our own hotel room in Florida, going to the beach everyday. It's too good to be true.
A few minutes later, after hearing one end of a muffled phone conversation in the room next door, Ava runs in and tackles me into a bear hug. "They said yes!" She squeals, "Mum and dad are going to be gone for business too so I can go!" We jump up and down some more, and I rush out to tell my aunt the good news.
"Wait when are we leaving?" I ask Katie after we told her that Ava could come.
"Oh yeah, we may be leaving, um, tomorrow?" She says, making it sound more like a question than a statement."TOMORROW?!" Ava and I shout, both raising our eyebrows in shock. I watch my aunt nervously giggle and point up to my room.
"You girls better go start packing." She says. Ava squeals and tells me she's going back to her house to pack. I nod and say goodbye before racing up to my room to grab the stuff I'll need for our holiday.
Once my suitcase is stuffed to the brim I collapse onto my bed, letting out a huge, contented sigh.
I whisper to myself, "This summer's gonna be great."
