Chapter 15

Elizabeth

Niall looks at me patiently, waiting for me to fully calm down. Once I do, I take a notepad and pen that was beside his bed and start to write. I write about how I started piano, how my parents always supported me, how much music affected me, how I went to that recital, how my parents got hit, how I became mute, and how I'm in an orphanage.

Whilst I'm writing, I pause repeatedly to regain my thoughts. I don't like thinking about it. I can't even believe that I'm writing about it. A few tears fall onto my cheeks when I write certain parts, but I wipe them away immediately. Niall keeps his gaze on me the whole time I'm writing. Once I'm done, I hand him the notepad and put down the pen. He gives me a small smile and lightly kisses me before reading it out loud.

"My life used to be perfect- well as perfect as ones life could be. I had loving parents who supported me throughout everything, easy classes with nice teachers, a boatload of amazing friends, and a passion towards music. Surprisingly enough, my favourite instrument was the piano. I remember seeing it for the first time. I was seven, and I saw it when visiting a friend's house. I asked my mother what it was and if I could play. She, of course, said yes. Little did I know that it would change my life forever.

My dad told me that before I got to play piano, I had to learn to read sheet music for it. I didn't know why I had to learn it. I thought that I could just play and be good at it. I wanted to give up all together so many times, but my dad wouldn't let me. I eventually was able to read music and I remember being so happy.

I was finally able to play, and my mother showed me different chords and all of the keys on the piano. I was then finally able to play my first song. It took a few weeks, but I was able to play the whole song. I only played that song for at least a month, but my parents never complained. Soon enough, I learned more and more songs and became better at piano.

I decided to try other instruments like the guitar, flute, trumpet, and the drums. But I kind of failed at the drums, so I don't really play them. Even though I played these instruments, the piano was by far my favourite. It was my first instrument after all. When I was thirteen, my music teacher showed me a flyer about some recital at the school and told me that I should be apart of it. I, of course, ran home and asked my mother if I could be apart of it. I wish I didn't though.

I practiced and practiced a song that I wanted to play and actually perfected it in the nick of time. The school wasn't too far from my house so my parents and I decided to walk there. I played the piece and I just forgot everything except for what I was doing. All I knew was piano. and I suddenly wasn't preforming in front of people, I was playing to myself- for myself. I'll never forget that feeling. Then we had to walk back.

The light turned red and my parents and I were crossing the street. A car didn't stop though. It just kept moving, and it seemed to be moving faster and faster. My mother saw the car and pushed my dad and I out of the way before trying to move herself. The car hit her before she could though. My dad ran after her, but the light turned green and he was hit too.

The cars didn't stop, they just kept driving over them. I cried and sobbed and shook until the police arrived. When I saw them, I couldn't believe my eyes. They looked horrible, I knew they were dead. I just didn't want to believe it. I wasn't until someone said what I already knew that I broke down. I screamed and cried and sobbed until I couldn't make a sound. When I went to the doctor, he told me I was mute.

Everyone knew what happened. Everyone knew that I was mute. I lost all my friends. But who could blame them? Nobody wants to be friends with the mute freak who watched her parents die. I was put into an orphanage and even they looked at me with pity. I was glad when I moved to another orphanage, but I was still a freak that couldn't talk. I always had nightmares of that night and even though I don't have them every night anymore, I still have them every other night. Maybe even every two nights if I'm lucky.

My whole life changed because of the piano. It ruined me. It killed my parents. I killed my parents. I'm the reason that they're dead. If I never played the piano they would still be here. I can't look at the piano anymore without remembering what it did. I can't be near one of those things. I can't." By the time Niall finished reading it, I was already shaking in silent sobs. Hearing it hurt even more than remembering it. It makes it seem so much more real.

Niall put down the notepad and pulled me to him. He put his hand through my hair while I cried into his chest. Once I stopped crying, I pulled away from Niall. I wiped away my tears and regained my composure. I wipe the snot from my nose with my arm, and look at my lap. I don't want to see the look on Niall's face from reading what happened.

"Elizabeth look at me." I still look at my lap and he sighs. He pushes my head up and forces me to look at him.

"Why don't you want to look at me?" I bite my lip and shrug.

"You know that I still care about you no matter what, right? I won't judge you for your past. You seem even stronger to me now that I know this. I am honoured to know that you trust me enough to tell me this. We'll get through this together." The sincerity in his tone makes me smile. I lean up and kiss him. He pulls away and stands up.

"C'mon, this date isn't over yet. I'm going to help you get over your fear of pianos." My eyes widen at this and I'm hit by a huge wave of fear. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I know I have to get over it someday. I reluctantly nod my head and open my eyes to see Niall with a grin on his face.

I just hope I don't regret this.
