The light was shining through the window of my bedroom and directly into my face. Moaning, I rolled onto my side to avoid the glare.
"Minian! Come for breakfast!"

I groaned in response, but knowing that my mother will literally drag me out of bed to eat, I got up and brushed out the wrinkles in my white satin sleep clothes. I walked to the mirror and frowned at the look of my messy pink hair.
"I feel sorry for the people who have to look at me." I grumbled. My mother yelled again
"Minian!"

"Coming!" I shouted back, quickly grabbing a brush to pull through my hair. I threw my sleep clothes off and folded them nicely before putting them in the drawer.

I took out a red and purple robe to wear for the day. Once dressed, I grabbed my two red ribbons and put my hair in it's trademark pigtails. I smiled once at myself in the mirror- much more presentable- and shook my head to make my pigtails hit me in the face. I giggled and headed to the dining room for breakfast.
"Morning." I said while grabbing a wooden chair and pulling it out to sit in.
"Morning princess." My mother said over her shoulder while shaking the bacon onto the pan.
"Ah ah ah, Minian." My father said, getting out of his chair and placing his newspaper on the table. I looked at him, confused, and let go of the chair, taking a step back.

"The gentleman always helps the lady into her seat." My father pulled my seat out before gesturing at me to take it. I pouted at him. "I can do it myself, Father." I then slowly took a seat while flattening out my dress.
"I am well aware, but a lady, such as yourself, must be treated as a lady." He chuckled and took his own seat. I pouted even more.
"I am not a lady, I haven't even had my first shifting." Mother giggled as she placed the bacon on the table with the eggs and toast.
"It takes time Minian, just be patient." She started to untie her apron, "The God has-"

"A plan for everyone, I know I know." Mother stopped her movement for a second. Clearly she was annoyed that I had interrupted her. She placed the apron on a unused chair and took her seat near Father, grasping his hand. "Thank the Elders for this bountiful meal." She sang with her eyes closed, the signal to us to begin eating. I placed some eggs and bacon on my plate but didn't eat, instead playing with the eggs on my fork. My Mother must have noticed because she gave me a confused look. I looked up at her and asked, "Why do we thank the Elders?" Hearing no more clinking told me that Father had stopped eating as well.

My mother smiled and responded carefully, "The Elders are what keep us safe."
"I thought it was the Gods and Goddesses that do that."
My mother nodded, "Yes, they keep us safe from famish and destruction. The Elders- Well, how do I explain this?" She gave her husband a look and he nodded, "They protect us from.. Things." They continued to eat, satisfied with the quiet, before I interrupted the silence again.
"From vampires?"

My father slammed his fist onto the table top, making the silverware rattle. He gave me a strict look.
"How do you know of that young lady?" I looked at him, confused, but then realized what I had just said. I covered my mouth with both hands and started to panic on the inside. "Young lady, explain how you know of such beings!" He raged.
My mother placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, "Honey, do calm down. We don't want anyone hearing."
His tenseness seemed to melt away at her touch.
"Minian." I locked gazes with him, "Those things are forbidden, they cannot be talked about. Please don't speak of them. If the Elders find out, they will banish you."
"Since I do know about them, please tell me about how the Elders protect us."

My mother looked at my father and nodded; he swallowed and rested his elbows on the wooden table.
"There are things called portals, which I think you may already know about. They let people teleport in and out of dimensions. However, it's not just a one way street, meaning that if things can go out, they can get in- if we can get out of Safe Haven, the vampires can get in." I took a deep breath through my nose and nodded for him to continue. "The Elders have enough power together to make a- sort of a force field against them. The reason we thank the Elders, is because we would be dead without them. Now, I don't want to hear about this again."
