The sea of green jumpers disappeared through the double door at the front of the school, and I followed. The warmth of the building hit me as I walked through the door, a massive contrast to the bitterly cold air outside. The bell rang so I lumbered off to my classroom, my head down, my eyes glued to the floor. I tried to push the thoughts of the couples in town to the back of my mind so I could at least concentrate in school today. As I pushed the tutor door open, I smiled as I saw the group sat in the corner.
‘Zara’ Gemma screamed, engulfing me in a warm hug. After a few minutes she let go. ‘Hey guys’ I addressed the whole group ‘good weekend?’. The popular response for this question was always ‘meh’. I pulled up a chair next to Gemma and tuned into their conversation. Just the usual Year 11 girl talk; boyfriends, makeup, parents, parties blah blah. I sat back and looked at all my wonderful friends. Gemma, Lacey, Bess, Katherine,Beth and Zara. That was our little group. They were all so gorgeous, so friendly and I was like the black sheep. I was tiny, with dark brown hair and white skin. I was so shy; they were outgoing. I weighed myself down with pointless worries whereas they hadn’t a useless care in the world. I was the type of girl that would sit in corner and cry to myself, and they were the type that’d wipe my tears away and comfort me. Although we were all so different, we somehow ‘worked’. We were part of this … this sisterhood almost. I leaned in and listened to the conversation joining in at some points for the next ten minutes, until Mr. Powell arrived.
‘CLASS 11P GET TO YOUR SEATS AND SIT QUIETLY’ his voice boomed around the room.
We all sighed and retired to our seats, a few people walking in late. I took my seat next to Ed, greeting him and then acknowledging the usually empty seat next to me, which was now no longer empty.
‘Hello, I’m Zara’ I leant across and offered him my hand. He took it in his, my tiny hand enclosed in his strong masculine one, his crystal blue eyes staring into my boring ones. I felt so fragile, so weak compared to him.
‘Hello Zara, I’m William’ he shook my hand and smiled before turning back round to listen to Powell talking about something. I turned back to face Mr. Powell but I couldn’t quite concentrate. I kept looking back to William. His blonde hair was short. He was pale but his skin was clear-which I found surprising for a teenage boy, normally their faces were smothered in acne. His eyes were gorgeous, so mesmerizingly blue. He wasn’t bad looking, but he wasn’t too good-looking either. It was just … something about him. I wanted to know more about him, he was just so mysterious.
‘Zara, I see you met our latest addition to the class. 11P, may I introduce you to William Harnop. I hope you’ll give him a warm welcome and I’m sure you’ll fit in very well, William’ Mr. Powell said, looking up at William, smiling and then going back to his work. ‘William, can you come here for a minute?’ he asked and William walked over to his desk. ‘Alright class, no notices this morning, so talk quietly among yourselves.’ Mr. Powell addressed the class then started talking to William.
The rest of the class broke off into little groups, chatting away about their weekend.
‘You seemed fascinated by the new kid.’ I heard Ed say as he turned around the face me.
‘Oh god was it that obvious?!’ I blushed as I asked him, thinking that everyone must have seen me.
‘Nah it wasn’t thatnoticeable’ He replied. He’d known me since year 7 and we’d become pretty close so I guess he would have picked up on it. Ed is very observant as well.
‘Oh … yeah he just seems … interesting’ I said, looking up at William, who was now receiving books and a timetable from Mr. Powell. The bell rang and William walked back to his desk to pick up his bag.
‘Have a good day 11P.’ Mr. Powell walked over to the door and held it open for us. We all filed out.
‘Yeah, from the rumors I’ve heard, he seems VERY interesting’ Ed whispered in my ear as we walked out.
‘Ed…. Wait… What? What rumors?!’ I raised my voice as he walked away, not turning back to answer my question. The girls came out and we started walking down our first lesson of the day, mathematics.
