Me, Margret, and Mark shot up from our chairs staring at the hatch that leads outside. The base collectively moved back as the hatch shook. Someone behind me started yelling.
" Everyone down to the lower levels, members of the base council stay."
The three of us moved out of the room in the panicked mass, I felt myself jolted and pushed as all of us filed into the stairways. The shots continued and they became more rapid. As we jogged down the stair well I glimpsed Kart darting out from below us running to the hatch. I tried to keep with Margret and Mark trying not to be torn apart. The gun shots sounded louder.
We emptied out into the maze of halls all of us scattering into different rooms. I slipped into a lounge room and looked for a hiding place. I ended up ducking into a small dresser with Margret while Mark shuffled into a cabinet.
We could here the foots steps. About two to three men seemed to be stomping in the halls, a soft clicking followed them.
Click. Click. Clack. Click.
My breathing matched Margret's the longer we stood there, hoping we won't be found. Hoping does nothing.
The room's door opened and we heard the footsteps sound grow. The clicks continued. Me and Margret sulked down into the dresser. Silence.
BANG!
Mine and Margret's breathing stopped all together. The foot steps became faint and the door slammed. Me and Margret burst put of the dresser to see a bullet sized hole in the wall, smoldering. Mark climbed out of his cabinet and stared at the smoldering gap in the wood.
We waited there silently for maybe an hour until a base council member entered the room.
"All is clear, the perpetrator has been caught."
The hall was full of gossip. Who was it? Why were they here? Did anyone get shot? What were they looking for?
We were corralled into a room and told to wait. I stayed silent. I look over and see Squirt jog over to me, his face panicked.
"Liz, can you come with me real quick, the council wants you?"
"Why?" I asked.
"The intruders asked to speak with you."
