It takes a while for us to ride to the fence. The sun sets and the sky becomes so dark I can only see the the silhouettes of things. The stars shine faintly in the sky, and the moon only reveals it's dark side.
"Tris, come on," Four says to the Stiff, shaking her awake. "We have to jump up."
Daisy lifts her head from my shoulder and stands up, then offers me a hand. I take her hand and lift myself up then turn to the entrance.
"Is there an easy way to do this?" She asks. I shake my head at her.
"Just do what feels right." I mutter. I never thought I would be trying to explain to Daisy how to jump off a train. It's too rough for her.
Three people jump off first, then Tris and Four together. My heart wrenches at the sight of them holding hands. My fingers automatically reach to touch my sideburn tattoo.
Nirvana.
I had done my best to keep her off my mind but did not find it very successfully. All I can think about is if she's alive, is she safe, where is she? I gulp at the idea of her being dead, and shake the thoughts from my head.
Without warning, Daisy jumps immediately after them, and jump after her. I see her silhouette lose balance as soon as soon as she hits the floor, and then start to roll and tumble. I land easily and walk over to her. I almost forget that Stiff shot me in the foot.
She's rubs her elbow for a second, but then quickly stands up and starts following our band of misfits.
"You okay?" I ask, walking beside her.
"Yeah." She says, looking up at the fence that dwarfs her. It's closed tight.
"There are supposed to be Dauntless guards here, where are they?" I hear Marcus ask.
"They were probably under the simulation and are now..." Four pauses. "Who knows where, doing who knows what."
Four starts to walk towards the keypad on the fence but I wave my hand at him.
"I got it." I say, and punch in the numbers.
48755690
The gate clicks open.
"How did you know that?" Some Erudite boy asks me. I roll my eyes at him.
"I'm a leader." I say.
"Of Dauntless?"
"Well no shit." I snap at him. He flinches back and I notice the tear streaks on his cheeks.
"Don't be so mean Bubba." Daisy says.
"I'm not, I just hate it when people ask stupid questions." I say keeping eye contact with the boy. He turns his head away from in fear.
"Hey! Don't talk to him like that." Stiff says behind me. I clench my fists and feel red hot anger build inside me.
"Or what?" I say turning towards her.
"Or I'll-"
"Hey! That's enough!" Four shouts, and steps in between us.
"Who put you in charge?" I mutter.
"Don't start." He says, crossing his arms across his chest.
I start to open my mouth, but then quickly stop myself when I feel someone tug on my sleeve. I turn towards them and see Daisy, and she yanks me to continue walking in front of them. Once we get far in front of them, she lets of my wrist.
"What's the matter with you?" She asks. I don't look at her, I keep my gaze on the grass.
"Nothing." I mutter.
