5 Months Earlier...
Jen's POV
I was playing Mario on my gameboy, when suddenly, I heard a crash. I ran downstairs to see a vase smashed on the floor, and my dad screaming at my mom. She was on the floor, her hands smeared with blood. My brother Bob ran down and hugged me, surveying the room. "Get out of here!!" My dad screamed at my mom. He punched her in the face, and she got to her feet. She threw a piece of glass at my dad, who shoved here out the door. She fell, and my dad slammed the door shut. I ran upstairs, crying the second I reached my room. Bob followed me, and we sat on my bed, crying.
Present Day
I woke up late for school, by accident, ready for Bob to beat me, since he had become a drug addict after what happened to my parents. We used to be really close, but now I have no one except for my best friend Beth. I thought about jumping out the window, but decided that it was too dangerous. I guess I'll have to just face him like a woman. He ran upstairs, I could hear his footsteps from my room."Jennifer Carter!!!" He screamed, "Get your butt out of bed!!!" He ran into my room, and slapped me across the face. It really hurt, and I'm sure that there will be a permanent red mark there. I immediately got up, and got dressed. I put on an old pair of jeans, and my Pac-Man tee. I ran down the stairs, and grabbed a cereal bar just as the bus pulled up outside. I grabbed my bag and ran outside just in time. I got on the bus, and everyone snickered at me.
"Hey look, it's the ugly fat girl," I heard someone whisper under their breath. I took my usual seat in the back, the one that was always empty. I slouched down in the seat, and put my headphones in my ears. I played One Call Away by Charlie Puth on repeat until the bus pulled up at the school. This has been one of my favorite songs ever since Bob started abusing me. I wish that it was true, that there was that one person that I could call to just magically fix my life. I got off the bus, and one of the mean girls, Frannie, tripped me. Everyone laughed at me. I stood up, and brushed myself off. I quickly walked into the building, so I couldn't get any more humiliated. I walked to my locker, and opened it. A note fell out, and I picked it up.
It read: No one likes you, you'll never get a boyfriend, your just an ugly little slime ball, stupid little slug.
-Franníe
I just wanted to curl up into a ball and die. I crumpled the note into a little ball, then chucked it at the wall. It fell in the trash can. I grabbed my books for English, than ran off to class, trying not to cry."Ah, Jennifer, sixth person in class, what a record!" The teacher exclaimed, clapping. People whistled sarcastically. I took a seat, then waited for everyone else to arrive. I looked around for Beth, my only friend. I didn't see her. She's probably just late, always is. Five minutes later, after everyone else arrived, she walks into the room.
"Late again Ms. Destiny," the teacher says to her, "tsk tsk, late as always." She takes attendance, then starts her lesson. We talked about grammar for all of class, then the bell rang. I ran over to Beth, to tell her about the note. We walk to her locker.
"I got a mean note from Frannie," I say to her.
"Really!?" She exclaims, "That idiot! I'm gonna kill her!" I love Beth. She always sticks up for me.
"Let's get to math," I say, "don't want to be yelled at by Mr. Green, though I doubt he'd yell at us, he loves me."
"Yeah, let's get to your locker," she replies, and we hurry to my locker. I grab my binder, then we run to class. I trip over the recycling bin, and all of the papers explode out of it. Beth runs over to help me pick them up. Everyone snickers at me, not Beth. Everyone loves Beth, but they hate me. Even though I'm pretty much the nicest girl in the school. We clean up the papers, and everyone is staring at us as we walk back to our seats.
"Thank you for cleaning that up girls," Mr. Green says to us. At least he likes me, he is my favorite teacher ever. He got started on the lesson right away, we learned about monomials and polynomials. When class ends, I start walking towards the door, but Mr. Green stops me. "Jen," he calls out to me. I walk over to him.
"Yes?" I reply.
"I need to talk to you in private," he whispers, and we go behind his desk. "Jen, what happened?" He asks, pointing to the red spot on my face. He is the only teacher that I can talk to, so I've told him about my family situation.
"Bob hit me," I answer, trying not to be heard by anyone. I see Beth waiting awkwardly at the door. I motion for her to leave, and she does.
"Jen, have you told anyone else besides me and Beth?" I shake my head. "Jen, you need to tell someone," he says, "before things get worse. I'll take you to a therapist if you want."
"I... I... I just can't. Bob will probably kill me, literally," I reply, then wave goodbye as I leave to go to my locker. I have science next, then lunch. I grab my books, then shuffle off to class. The teacher, Miss Caroline, greets me with a warm welcome.
"Hello Jennifer, how are you?" Awful, just utterly horrible. "Great," I say, managing to pull off a fake smile. I walk over to my seat, which happens to be "conviently" located right next to Frannie.
"Hey jerk," she greets me, smiling, "I see that someone did a good deed," she points to the slap mark on my face, smirking. Like I said earlier, I want to die. Not literally, but all because of Frannie. Miss Caroline takes attendance, then starts talking about the kingdoms of life. I take it all in, knowing that we will be tested on it. Frannie keeps stabbing me with her pencil, but no one seems to notice. I hit her hand, and she screams.
"Frannie, no screaming in my classroom," Miss Caroline says to her, "and no hitting people, Jennifer. Do it again and I'll send you to the principal's office." She continues the lesson, and I try to ignore Frannie. She is so annoying though, and the pencil keeps constantly jabbing into my arm. I know that if I tell on her I'll get in trouble, so I keep my mouth shut until the end of class. I am so relieved when it ends that I am the first one out of class. Frannie is running behind me, and she falls to the ground.
"Omg Frannie, are you ok?" Everyone asks her, crowding around her.
"Yes," she says, "I think I'll be ok. Jenny just tripped me, that's all." I hate it so much when people call me Jenny. Her friends help her up, and scowl at me. I'm 100% sure that Frannie pretended to fall, then told everyone that I tripped her when I really didn't. But no one would believe me if I told them the truth. I go to my locker to grab my lunch box, then wander around to find Beth. I finally find her in the bathroom, I can see her bright blue converse underneath the stall door.
"Beth?" I call out.
"Yeah?" She answers, coming out of the stall.
"Let's go to lunch," I say, "I'm starving." She washes her hands, then we walk to lunch. We sit down at our usual table, the one in the corner away from everyone. I tell her about this morning, cautious not to let anyone else hear me.
"Really!?" She exclaims, "Jen, I feel so bad for you." I smile, knowing that she actually cares about me. We eat our lunches, then go to the rest of our classes. We sit through boring social studies, then go to gym. I've always liked gym, but I'm horrible at it, and everyone always makes fun of me. We got to class, and our teacher, Mrs. Hems, told everyone to run five laps around the gym. By the end of them, I am so tired.
"Hustle hustle," Mrs. Hems says to us, "We're playing dodgeball. You," she points to Frannie, "and you," she points to Marcus, "will be the team captains. Choose wisely." As always, I am the last one picked. I get stuck on Marcus' team. "3...2...1... Dodgeball!" Mrs. Hems screams, blowing her whistle. Beth is on my team, so she blocks some shots for me. All of a sudden, Frannie whips a ball at me, and it hits me square in the face. I black out.
