Pat's POV
My mom woke me up at six o'clock sharp for school. She always wakes me up early so I get to school early. I get up, then change into a pair of black pants and my favorite muscle tee. It's a black one, simple and casual. I go downstairs, where dad is sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and looking on his phone."Hey dad," I say to him, and he looks up from his phone.
"Hey Pat," he replies, and hands me a protein bar and shake. Mom is down here too.
"Hey sweetie," she says to me, "eat up, you have a big day ahead of you." Not really. It's just another typical day of highschool, nothing special. I slowly eat my breakfast, to enjoy it.
"So, you still going out with Frannie?" Dad asks me.
"Yeah," I reply. She is such a jerk, but she's the most popular girl in the whole school, so it's like an honor to date her. I don't like her at all though. I finish eating, then go into the bathroom to brush my teeth. When I'm done, I hear the bus pulling up at my house. "Bye mom, bye dad!" I call out to them as I leave the house. When I get on the bus, I see Frannie sitting alone in a seat in the back.
"Sit here, Pat," she calls out to me, motioning for me to sit with her. I do, even though I really don't want to. I can't help but notice that there is a girl in the seat diagonal from ours, and she is slumped down in her seat. She has headphones in her ears, and she has long, blondish brown hair. She is so pretty, beautiful even. I don't think that she is wearing make up, and she looks gorgeous without it. Frannie catches me staring at her.
"That's Jenny," she says, pointing to the girl, "she's an idiot, no one likes her except for her 'friend' Bethany. Isn't she just an ugly little freak?" Frannie smirks. No, she's the prettiest girl I've ever seen!!
"Sure, whatever," I say casually.
"She's a slug," Frannie remarks. The bus ride isn't too long, but it seems like it is because Frannie keeps saying mean things about Jenny, and is acting so sweet to me. When we get to school, I get off of the bus. I hope that I can talk to the cute girl, Jenny. I am too nervous, and a little shy, to go up to her and start a conversation. Frannie trips her, and everyone starts laughing. Everyone but me. She gets up, and dusts herself off. I want to walk up to her, but she quickly walks into the building and disappears before I have the chance. Frannie takes my hand, interlacing our fingers. I want to just pull away from her and find the girl, but I don't have the courage to do so.
"Let's go, Pat," she says to me, sweetly. I have to refrain myself from gagging. We walk into school, and I pull away from her.
"I've got to go to my locker," I say to Frannie.
"Bye baby," she says to me, and I gag when she is out of my sight. I have science first, I don't want to be late. I grab my binder and head off to class. I am the first person there, as always.
"Hi Pat," the teacher, Miss Dunfield, says to me. All of my teachers call me Pat, not Patrick. I prefer Pat, because Patrick is such a long name.
"Hi Miss Dunfield," I reply. Everyone else enters shortly after I do, and Miss Dunfield takes attendance. Everyone is here except for Freddy. My best friend, Jim, sits beside me. "Do you know 'Jenny'" I ask him, "she has blondish brown hair, and she's about my height."
"Jennifer?" He replies, "the slug?" Why is everyone calling her that!?
"Yeah, I think that's her," I say.
"Why?" He asks. "Oh, I just think she's cute, that's all," I reply. "Jenny!?" He exclaims, "she is not pretty. Besides, aren't you dating Frannie?"
"Yeah, but I still think she's cute. Cuter than Frannie," I reply, because it's true. Miss Dunfield starts the lesson off by talking about chromosomes. I try to listen to her, but my mind keeps wandering, I keep thinking about Jennifer, Jenny. I really want to talk to her, see why no one likes her.
"Pat, what disease does this person have?" Miss Dunfield asks me.
"Um... They have..." I stutter, I have no idea.
"See me after class," she says to me. Uh-oh, my parents will be very mad at me if they find out that I had to stay late after class. Mark answers her question, and gets it right. We keep talking about chromosomes, then the bell rings. "Pat," Miss Dunfield calls my name, "you usually know all of the answers, what's gotten into you?" I don't want to lie to her, so I tell her the truth.
"Well, there's this girl..." She interrupts me.
"I thought that you were dating Frannie," she says to me. "Yeah," I say, "but there's this girl I have a crush on, Jennifer, I think that's her name."
"Jennifer!" Miss Dunfield exclaims, "you shouldn't get mixed up in her, I heard that she cuts herself. You're a good kid, Pat, I don't want you caught up in her, she's trouble. Everyone picks on her, and they'll pick on you if you start dating her." That just made me feel really bad for her. I want to talk to her, I think she's in my gym class. They mixed juniors and seniors in gym. I guess I'll just have to wait until after lunch.
*Timeskip To After Lunch*
I have gym next, I can't wait to talk to her, tell her how I feel. I get to class, and see her standing with someone, I think it's Bethany. I don't want to look like a fool by trying to talk to her, so I hope that we're on the same team for dodgeball. The team captains are Frannie, of course, and Marcus. I am on Frannie's team, and Jennifer is on Marcus'. She is the last person picked, and I feel bad for her.
"3...2...1...Dodgeball!" Mrs. Hems shouts, and the gym becomes a madhouse. I see Bethany block a few shots for Jennifer, and Frannie blocks some shots for me. Someone tosses Frannie a ball, and she whips it at Jennifer. She falls to the floor with a thud.
