I look up into Pat's eyes.

"I'm sorry..." I sob, "I didn't mean..." He cuts me off.

"Jen, look," he says, "Frannie came up and kissed me, and I love you, not her. I'm sorry that you thought otherwise... this was all just a huge misunderstanding" This time I cut him off.

"Pat..." I whisper, "I... I don't care. You saved me... And that's all that matters right now." He kisses me, then I bury my head into his shirt.

"Here." He hands me a small, black box. I open it, and inside is a silver ring with a light pink diamond in the center.

"It's beautiful," I say. "Just like you," Pat replies, and I smile, slipping the ring on my finger. It fits perfectly.

"What's it for?" I ask.

"It's a promise ring," he answers, "the way I see it, we're together as long as you're wearing the ring."

"I'll never take it off!" I exclaim, "It's permanent now." He smiles at me.

"I'm glad you like it."

"I love it," I reply. I look up at Dan and Jem. They're smiling.

"You two are so sweet!" Jem exclaims, then we hear the engine of a car. I look behind us and see it. A black car slowly creeping towards us.

Pat's POV

My mom's car. "Uh, Jen," I say, "that's my mom's car..." She stares at it, terrified.

"I see Bob..." She whispers, and starts crying again. I just keep hugging her, hoping that they pass by us. They don't. They park, and everyone gets out. There's my parents, Frannie, and Bob. They walk towards us.

"There you are," Bob says, grinning creepily, "you thought you could just run away from us, like it didn't matter. Like we wouldn't care. But it does matter. And we do care. And now, you're going to pay." My mom starts talking next.

"Pat," she says, "Frannie here wants to tell you something." Frannie smiles.

"Guess what!" She exclaims, "We're getting married!!" No... No, no, no. I'm NOT marrying Frannie. There's no way I'd ever marry her. My mom can't make me.

"That's right," mom says, "you are!" She grabs my leg and starts dragging me away from Jen. I attempt to pull away from her grip, but I can't. It's no use. Then, to add to the drama, a police car appears. I look over at Jen, and see Bob's hands around her neck. She's gasping for air. Dan and Jem try to pry him off, but he repeatedly kicks them away. My mom pulls me into the car, and shuts the doors, locking them. I feel so alone, without Jen by my side... I see a police man get Bob off of Jen, and drag him into the cop car. Another one talks to Jen.

Jen's POV

I'm so scared. I couldn't breathe. Bob tried to choke me. He did choke me. My own brother tried to kill me. All of a sudden, I'm shaken out of my thoughts.

"Hello? Hello? Ma'am?"

"Yes?" I answer, my voice quivering.

"Are you ok?" "Yeah," I say, "I... I think so." I then start coughing.

"Let's get you to a hospital, ok?" The police officer asks, "Before you see your new family." New family? What!?

"What new family?" I ask between coughing.

"I'll explain on the way," he says to me.

"You can come with us," he tells Dan and Jem.

*Le Timeskippy*

"So there's a man who is looking to adopt an older girl, about your age," he says, "and he's going to take you in, if it's ok." I'm finally going to have a loving family!? And a place to call home!? I'm so happy!! Finally! But... What about Pat? He's being forced to marry Frannie... I wish he was with me. Oh god, I'm so nervous.

*Le Timeskippy A La Hospital*

I wake up, and stretch. I look around. Why am I in a hospital? There's a doctor standing over me.

"Your ok, miss," he tells me, "we just had to do a check up on you, after what happened. We had to make sure you hadn't taken any pills or anything."

"Ok," I reply groggily. Then, a man walks up to me.

"Hello," he says to me, "I'm your new father, Wallace. Please, call me dad, if you want, I mean, I'm not forcing you to. I'll take good care of you, I promise."

"I'm Jen," I say. I feel like I can trust him, he seems like a very nice guy.

"I'll take you back to my place," he says, "we can talk some more, get to know each other better."

"Alright," I say with a smile. He's so nice.

"Let's do one last checkup," the doctor says, "then you're free to go."

*Timeskippy Peanut Butter*

We arrive at his house. It's pretty big. "Make yourself at home," he tells me with a smile, walking me inside. It's pretty homey. I walk into the living room, which has a huge fireplace, along with a couch and coffee table. I see a dining room, and kitchen. There's no stairs, but two bedrooms on the first floor. I walk into what I'm assuming is my room.

"We can redecorate, if you like," he says, smiling.

"That would be lovely," I reply. The room has mint green walls, a white ceiling, and a black rug which reminds me of Pat. I tear up thinking about him. I miss him so much. Wallace's voice pulls me out of my thoughts.

"What color would you like?" he asks. "Pink please," I reply, "but you can keep the carpet black." I think for a while, then ask,

"Are you married or dating? I'd love to know." "No," he replies, "I'm asexual, meaning I'm not interested in girls or guys."

"Oh, cool" I reply, "is that why you wanted a child?" "Yes," he replies. "I'd never have a kid of my own, so I figured I'd adopt." "Are you dating anyone?" I start tearing up again.

"Yeah," I answer. "Care to talk about him? Or her?" he asks, "And what happened?" I decide to tell him the truth. If I want trust him, I need to be honest with him.

"Well..." I tell him everything about my past. About my parents. Bob. Pat. When I'm done, he speaks. "I'm so sorry to hear all of this," he says, "I didn't know you had such a horrible life."

"Yeah," I reply, twirling the ring on my finger. "Where did you get that?" He asks.

"Pat gave it to me," I say, "before he had to leave."

"Oh," he looks down at the floor. After that, we sit in silence for a while. "Ya know," Dad says, "it's getting kinda late. Why don't we go to bed?"

"Ok," I reply, and go into my bedroom. I quickly get changed, into my pink pufferfish pajamas, then get into bed. Dad comes in a few minutes later, and tucks me in. Wow, for once in my life I feel loved.

"Goodnight Jen," he says, kissing my forehead, "love you."

"Love you too," I reply, then close my eyes and drift off to sleep...
