Chapter 26

Date: December 31st

Time: 1:34 p.m.

Location: New York City

Epic fail. Not just a regular fail but a total complete disastrous fail. We thought that once we got Maxwell’s information everything would be fine, Lockstar would be put away, we could walk the streets freely again. That turned out to be false.

The information we got from Maxwell is something that anyone and I do mean anyone could have forged. A high school student could have made it. So needless to say we needed more solid evidence that there were people doing a big human trafficking business that our own government was a part of.

Therein lies the dilemma.

To do this we needed physical evidence. We needed witnesses, photos, videos, transcripts, some profiles, we only had the first. How were we supposed to get a picture of them making a sale? We didn’t even know when or where they did it!

“Aura you in here?” A voice says and I groan and roll over in my sheets. “Oh no, you are not still asleep.” Their footsteps get closer. “Get up.”

“No.” I mumbled into my pillow.

“Its 1:30 how are you still tired?”

“You weren’t up until 5 a.m. trying to find someone that can get the people following us off our backs.” Even better M.L.A was back with a vengeance. His men were better, faster, and stronger; we barely avoided them when they found us.

“You mean Valentin?” They sit on the bed making it dip.

“He’s a lost cause.” I mutter.

“Maybe not. Aura we wouldn’t be pushing you to do this unless he was important so-“

“I know I know find him but that’s proving to be much more difficult than we had all planned.” I say cutting them off.

“Wakey wakey eggs and bakey!” Another voice says coming into the room, I curl tighter in a ball. “Aura still asleep?”

“Yep.”

“Well I have just the thing to wake her up.” A few seconds passed before ice cold water fell on me waking all my nerves. I shriek at the coldness and scramble out of the bed.

It wasn’t long before John and Matt came in guns at the ready. Oh boy another problem! I think sarcastically. John was still trying to get with me after two months of our barely there kiss. Don’t get me wrong I like him I really do but things are way too complicated to add relationship in the equation.

He tried to kiss me under every mistle toe and it was becoming hard to avoid him. I wanted to be with him but I also don’t know what to do about it in this type of situation.

Just like I didn’t know what to do about Sam and Terri. They were my family, my best friends. We spent every holiday together just to hang out and now they were gone hiding in some remote location. Now I spent every waking hour with Fran, Iris, John, and Matt. While they were increasingly annoying they were also easy to be with, and as strange as it sounds they were starting to grow on me.

Yes with all the complications and drama and Iris trying to kill me we became our own dysfunctional family. Try putting that in a Christmas card.

With legs shaking I blink back to the present rubbing my icy arms and glaring at Iris that was looking at the bucket confused.
