Chapter 32
Date: April 9th
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: Cherrywood Courthouse
Judge Palston had a name that was all too familiar and I was digging through my memories to figure out why as I took in his appearance. He was a heavy set man with little hair that sat on top of his liver spotted head. His black robe that he was wearing looked more like a blanket and made him look like a walking blob.
Palston grabbed his gavel surveying the crowd and his gaze rested on one person before quickly moving to the next. I turn around to see that the judge had locked eyes with the creepy blonde and my face paled momentarily. Something about seeing the two of them together didn’t sit right within me.
“Be seated,” The judge’s baritone voice sounded throughout the room. We all sat in a tense silent awaiting his next command. He put on wire framed reading glasses and picked up the report on my case as if he didn’t have the time to check it before. “Ms. Carter is it?”
“Yes,” I answer unsure of where he was going with this.
“Mr. Gregson please make your opening statement.” Jeffery stood up and straightened his suit before walking out from behind the desk for more pacing room.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury we all know that this case has been going on far too long and is meaningless. Yes three people have died but we all know that this girl could not have done it, look at her!” He points to me and I shift uncomfortably under the jury’s gaze. “Does she look like she could take another human life?”
“Objection!” The other lawyer said standing up.
“Overruled, Gregson continue.” Palston countered looking absolutely bored as if the case was already finished.
“Thank you your honor. I plead with you to not give into the media hype. Three people have died and that is indeed a tragedy but more than enough evidence proves that this girl was not at any of the crime scenes when the actual murder took place. If my opponent has anything that suggests otherwise I say we put this case to rest today. That is all, thank you.” Jeffery finished and walked back over to me looking slightly confident. The jury murmured back and forth but I was too far away to distinguish what they were saying.
“Good job.” I whisper to Jeffery, what else were you suppose to say in situations like this?
“Thanks and don’t worry so much there is 0.00000000001 percent chance that you will go to jail.” I nod my head feeling slightly relieved.
“Mr. Tate your opening statement.” The other lawyer gets up and I finally get a better look at him. He looked like the typical slimy lawyer with hair greased back and a confident smile planted firmly on his face the whole time.
“How stupid can you all be?” He starts off. I didn’t know much about law but I was pretty sure insulting the jury wasn’t a good idea. “That girl over there has more evidence pinned against her but you are overlooking those facts because of her age. Why else would Ms. Carter arrive at the scene just after they were murdered? I don’t believe in coincidence and you are smart enough to know that coincidence doesn’t work as perfectly as this. And who’s to say Ms. Carter didn’t have help? She is a smart girl she surely could have gotten someone to help her. I won’t say anymore, I’ll let you mull over this.” Tate strided back to his table and sat down.
