We yelled and screamed at Gordie to run as fast as he could. Then I saw it, Chopper. I started laughing at the sight of Chopper, the most fierce and least seen dog in Castle Rock, that he was no more than a little golden retriever puppy, with a big name to fill.

I laughed harder as Gordie climbed the fence and landed on his side.

"That's Chopper?" Gordie yelled, exasperated. Milo Pressman, Choppers owner, came waddling over to us.

"Hey! You stop teasing that dog, you hear?"

"And why don't you try to come over here and get me, Fat Ass?" Teddy shot back, laughing.

"I know who you are. You're Teddy Duchamp. Your dad's a loony at the nut house up in Togus. He held your ear to a stove burnt it off," the old hag said.

"My father stormed the beaches at Normandy," Teddy said quiet, but cold.

"He's crazy. No wonder you're acting the way you are, with a loony for a father!"

"Call my dad loony again and I'll kill you," Teddy said. I could tell he really meant it. I wanted to say something, but I decided to stay out of it.

  "Loony, loony, loony."

"I'm going to rip your head off and shit down your neck!" at that moment, Vern, Gordie, Chris and I, tried to pull Teddy of the fence he had hopped onto.

"He wants to come over there so he can beat the crap out of you!" I yelled.

"You stay out of this, let him do his own fighting," Milo said, pointing a finger at me.

"Sure. You only outweigh him by 500 pounds, fat ass!" Gordie yelled.

"Hey, wait a minute, I know who you are. Your Lachance, and you're Lauren Banks. I know all you guys. All your fathers are going to get a call from me; except for the nut house in Togus and the dead-beat in New York," Milo said. He was talking about my dad. He was talking about my dad.

At that exact moment, Teddy and I both jumped onto the fence and cussed out Milo, before the other guys pulled us off.

We turned around, while being dragged, and continued our journey. Teddy was crying, but I couldn't. I hadn't cried in years, not since my parents had their big fight. I was walking at a slower pace, behind the rest of the gang.

"Maybe this shouldn't be a party," Gordie said, after Teddy had snapped at the guys for pressuring him.

"You saying you want to go back?" Chris asked.

"We aren't going back," I said. Everyone looked at me. I had shed a few silent tears that were still streaming down my face. I passed by the guys and they all watched me continue walking. They followed by, silent.

Teddy seemed to be much better after a few minutes, and him and Vern started singing 'Lollipop' by the Chordettes. I was walking right in the middle of Teddy and Vern, and Chris and Gordie. I could hear both conversations. Teddy and Vern where arguing, and Chris and Gordie were talking about school. I was kind of lost in my own thoughts, and enjoying the forest scenery, until I heard my name.

"So, when are you going to ask Lauren out?" It was Gordie.

"I don't know. I can just never find the right time to. And plus, I don't even know if she likes me." It was Chris. I mean, of course I liked him, he was Chris Chambers. I immediately started thinking about how my mother loved Chris like a son, and never thought of him like everyone else did.

"Of course she likes too. She has to. No one else is allowed to put their arms around her shoulders like you do, at least, that's her rule," Gordie replied. I blushed. Christopher liked me!

"Hey guys! By the time we get there, the kid won't even be dead anymore!" Teddy called, ruining the moment that I will remember forever. We caught up to Teddy and Vern, and Chris didn't say anything. He just slipped his hand into mine and smiled at me when I looked at him. I don't think he knew that I knew that he liked me, but I didn't say anything. We walked a little farther, before we came to a big bridge that had to be at least 100 feet above the river.

"There's a small bridge a few miles down. We can go down there," Chris said.

"No, no, no. That's a long way away. If you walk five miles down the river, you gotta walk five miles back. That could take til dark, and if we cross here, we can get to the same place in ten minutes," Teddy reasoned.

"Yeah, but if a train comes, where would we go?" I asked.

"You just jump."

  "Jump! Are you crazy?"

"That's at least a hundred feet, Teddy."

  "Yeah, Teddy."

"Okay, but you guys are dragging your candy asses halfway across the state and back, I'll be on the other side, relaxing with my thoughts," Teddy said as he started walking the tracks.

"Did you use your left hand or right hand for that?" I asked, getting laughs from everyone.

"You wish," Teddy replied. I shook my head and walked behind him. The order went, Teddy, me, Chris, Vern(who was crawling) and then Gordie, who was sick of going so slowly after Vern.

We were about halfway across the tracks when I felt a rumble, low and gurgling; almost like a train. I turned around in time to see Gordie stand up.

"TRAIN!"

I ran.
