"Oh God," I sobbed. Chris wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.
"Shh, shh. It'll be okay."
I had never actually seen a dead body before, outside of movies and stuff, and behind those bushes was the rest of Ray Brower. I was petrified.
We all walked slowly to get a better look. The train had knocked Ray Brower out of his Keds just like it had knocked the life out of his body. The kid wasn't sick, the kid wasn't sleeping, the kid was dead. We all stared in disbelief, but Gordie looked the most hurt.
"Lets look for some branches. We can build him a stretcher," Chris said. I didn't do anything. While the others walked away, I just kind of stood there, watching, waiting. Hoping the kid would wake up. If only dreams came true.
"Why did you have to die?" I asked quietly.
"Lauren?"
It was Gordie. By that point, I already had tears going in a steady flow down my face. I sat down on the log and never took my eyes off of Ray. I felt if I did, I would miss something.
"Lauren, you okay?" I felt Gordie's lanky arms awkwardly go around my shoulder. It was weird. Gordie and I didn't really have a 'hug-type' of relationship; that was always me and Chris's thing. But, the longer I sat there crying, the more natural it felt.
"No one deserves to die in pain. No one deserves to die at all," I said slowly. I knew Gordie had no clue what I was talking about; hell, I didn't even know myself. Soon, the arms around mine were shaking and I heard sobs. I looked up to see Gordie crying; the one to never cry and keep himself together. Chris came over and sat next to me.
"Denny shouldn't of died. It should've been me," Gordie said.
"Don't say that," Chris and I said in unison.
"It should've been me. I'm no good it should've been me. It should-"
"Don't say that, man!" I yelled. I was up on my feet now.
"If it was you them who would I write stories with? I wouldn't have anyone who didn't suck at that idiotic card game to mope around with? Hell, if it was you, the rest of us would be dead by morning and not from the accident; but from ourselves."
"But I ain't got nothin'. My dad hates me. He told me I'm no good."
"But I think you're good. And, if that dump can't see that, he might as well move in with my dad 3,000 miles away and join the other idiots," I said. He was still crying, so I sat down next to him and put his arm around my shoulder.
"Now, I'm not saying you can't cry a little." I squeezed him tight and his sobbing slowed.
"You're going to be a great writer someday, Gordie," Chris started. I knew he would take this the calmer way. He was good at making people feel good.
"Maybe you can write about us someday," He continued. "If you ever get hard-up for material."
"I guess I'd have to be pretty hard-up, huh?" Gordie asked. Chris and I laughed and nodded our heads.
"Well what do you know about this?" Ace asked, making us all jump. We scrambled up and Chris put his arm around me.
"It's my little brother and his girlfriend!" Eyeball said.
"Dump her now, Chambers. She'll just go breaking your heart like her sister did mine," Ace said.
"Wasn't planning on taking the body from us, was you now?" Ace asked when Chris didn't reply.
"Get away, man. We found him. We got dibs," Chris said back.
"We better start running, Eyeball. They got dibs."
"We earned him, man. You guys came in a car. That's not fair. He's ours," Chris said.
"That's not fair. He's ours," Eyeball mimicked, laughing.
"There are four of us, Eyeball. You just make your move," Teddy said. Then, as if by magic, five of the Cobras came down the hill.
"Vern, you little son of a whore! You was under the porch!" Vince said.
"No, no. I wasn't! It wasn't me, I swear!"
"I'm going to beat the living shit out of you!" Billy said as Vern ran away into the woods. Ace commanded Billy to stop and we all listened to what he had to say.
"Alright. Now you have two choices. You can leave quietly, we take the body. We beat the shit out of you, we take the body. What's it gonna be?"
"And besides. Billy and I found him first," Vince said.
"Yeah, Vern told us how you found him. 'Oh Billy! I wish we never boosted that car! Oh Billy I think I just turned my fruit of the looms into a fudge factory!'" Teddy said in a high pitched voice.
"Alright, Chambers. You had your chance. Now what's it gonna be?" Ace asked.
"Why don't you go home and fuck your mother some more?" Chris asked
Ace's face went red. He pulled out his switchblade and said: 'You're dead'.
"C'mon, Chris lets split!" Teddy said.
"They're not taking him," Chris said. He had a look to his face I'd never seen before. And to this day, I've never seen it since, or known what it was.
"Chris he's got a knife!" I said, pulling on his arm. He pushed me behind him and put his arms up to defend me.
"Ace, c'mon man," Eyeball said. At that moment I knew that Eyeball had somewhat sympathy for his little brother.
"You're going to have to kill me, Ace," Chris said. By then, I knew Chris was a goner and I started crying.
"No problem," Ace said, lunging forward and putting the knife to Chris's neck.
BAM!
The gun went off.
"You're not taking him. Nobody's taking him," Gordie said.
Gordie had found something that day, and it wasn't till years later that I knew what it was.
Hey loves! I know, I know. I haven't been updating like I promised I would. I've been really busy with end of the year stuff (thankfully it got out today) and I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do for my sequel (yes! A sequel! I'm really excited). So leave some ideas for my sequel and I'll look at them. I love hearing ideas! xoxo
