"You-you you love me back?" Chris stammered.
"I guess I do," I said with a smile. He sat up against the tree and wrapped his arms around me. He held me close and I tried a little experiment. Every time I moved away, he wrapped his arms tighter than before. I think he was afraid of loosing me, but I would never go away.
"Lauren?"
"Hm?"
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
I opened my eyes and looked up at him. I nodded my head quickly and he hugged me tighter.
"Good."
We fell asleep in that position, my head buried in his chest and his strong arms around me. We both easily fell into a deep, peaceful sleep, with smiles on our faces. The next morning I woke up to the sound of a train coming by, and Gordie was already awake, walking down from the tracks, reading a superhero comic. I looked up at Chris. He hadn't woken up yet and we were both in the same position from the night before. I shook him slightly to wake up, and his eyes fluttered open.
"Good morning!" I chirped.
"Good morning," Chris said, still half asleep. He closed his eyes again and was about to fall asleep again if I hadn't gotten up from his side. I kicked his shoe and his eyes opened immediately. He stood up, stretched, and we both went to gather our things.
"So, what kind of stuff did you guys do last night?" Teddy asked with a smirk.
"I got a girlfriend."
"I got a boyfriend."
Teddy laughed. "Oh wait, you're serious?"
We both nodded our heads.
"We should go. We need to find the body and get back before tomorrow morning, at least," I said. We walked along the tracks, eating blueberries and blackberries we had picked from a nearby bush. We ate while we walked; something we're all used to.
"Jeez, Gordie. Why couldn't of you got more breakfast-like stuff? You know, root beer, Twinkies, Pez, and uh-"
"I guess a more experienced shopper could've gotten more for your seven cents," I interrupted. We continued along the tracks, singing songs here and there, having silent moments as well. We were together, and in the end that's all that really matters.
"Lady and Gentlemen, the Royal," Chris said, putting his hands on his hips.
"God, the tracks go way out of the way."
"If we cut through the woods here, we would be at Back Harlow Road in an hour."
"I think we should stick to the tracks."
"I say we go across the field," I said.
"Gordie?"
"Yeah."
And that was that. Chris grabbed my hand and pulled me down the field, and we both laughed. Everyone followed in suit, and we made it to the woods. We started walking, but each step farther became muddier. My shoes and parts of my jeans were dripping with mud. The suction from the mud was so strong, I had to cling onto Chris just to get my foot out of it. We came to a little clearing that had a small pond of water. It didn't look too deep.
"Hey, it's not deep, it's shallow," Chris said, poking the water with a stick he'd broken off. We took about two steps in the water before it became really deep. And by 'really deep' I mean really deep. I was pretty tall, so I could reach the bottom of the pond and not get my hair wet. While the guys were goofing off, Gordie and I walked to the other end of the bank from where we started.
"Where ya goin', Banks?"
"What about you, Lachance?"
"Guys, Lauren and I really don't want to-" We got tackled.
"Sleeper hold! Sleeper hold! Nobody gets out of the sleeper hold."
"Vern, there's something on your neck."
"Yeah right."
"No, Vern, there really is something on your neck!"
"LEECHES!"
We hopped up and I ran behind a bush and started taking my clothes off and getting all the leeches off. The guys were on the other side, doing the same thing. Once I got them all off, I couldn't hear the boys' cries anymore. Then I heard it. Thump! I ran around to the other side of the bush with my jeans at my ankles and my shirt in my hand wearing only my undergarments. I didn't care.
Gordie had fainted. He had blood all over his hand and by that time, I realized what had happened. I tapped him lightly on the cheek, and he slowly woke up.
"Gordo? You okay?" I asked. He nodded. We all got up and got back into our clothes. While Teddy, Chris and Vern rolled up there bedrolls, Gordie and I sat under a tree. We didn't say anything, but that was the kind of friendship we had. No need for words. The boys started arguing, of course and we both yelled at them to stop.
"Maybe we should take Gordie back,"
"I'm not going back," Gordie said, and with that, stood up, and continued our journey. I followed. We walked along in silence, until around 30 minutes later, we came to the Back Harlow Road.
"Teddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Is this the Back Harlow Road?"
"Yeah."
"Teddy and Vern, you take the left side of the tracks. Chris, Lauren and I will take the right. If you see him, shout."
And so we looked harder than Vern did when he was trying to find his beloved pennies.
"I see him! I see him! Look!" Vern shouted.
We all ran over and looked to see a sight that made us all hold our breath.
Hey guys! So this fanfic is almost to an end :( I will probably only be doing one or two more chapters. I've been thinking about making this a sequel, but we will have to see:) I hope y'all enjoyed this chapter! Please vote and comment!
