Chapter 1

DAN'S POV

"Dan! Dan, wake up!" Phil shouted, banging on my door.

"I don't want to! Five more minutes!" I shouted back. I groaned and rolled over, knowing Phil would not allow me five more minutes of precious sleep.

"No, Dan, you have to get up." He said, opening my door, walking in, and pulling my blankets off of me.

"PHIL!" I exclaimed. "What if I was naked?"

"Well, its a good thing you're not then, isn't it? Come on, Daniel. Its my birthday!"

"Ugh, fine, I'm up, I'm up." I mumbled, sitting up and running my hands through my hair. "On a level of one to Frodo, how hobbity is my hair?"

"Bilbo Baggins." Phil answered. "Leave it. I like your curly hair! Now get up, and get dressed, we're going."

I put my head in my hands and sighed. No, it was his birthday, I reminded myself. I got up, and selected a black t shirt and blue jeans to wear. I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth, trying to avoid looking in the mirror. Hobbit hair. I left the bathroom and went into the kitchen.

"I made you coffee!" Phil called from the lounge area.

"Aww, Phil. You didn't have to do that." I grabbed the mug off of the table and sat down next to him on the sofa. "You don't have to do anything today, if you don't want to. Happy birthday."

"Thanks, Dan!" Phil exclaimed, surprising me with a ninja attack tackle hug.

"Phil, I have hot liquid!"

"Sorry!" Phil pulled back and smiled at me. I smiled back, I couldn't stay angry at him.

"Its alright, Phil." I said, setting my coffee down and giving him a proper hug. He squeezed me tightly.

"This is going to be the best birthday ever." He said, pulling away.

"Yeah, it will!" I said, jumping up and moving towards the door. "Let's get going, Phil!"

We walked out of the flat together and got into a lift. Once we were in the lift, I pulled out my phone to text PJ.

To:Peej

[All clear.]

PJ and Chris were going to decorate the flat for a surprise birthday party for Phil.

"Who are you texting?" Phil asked, trying to see my phone.

"Your mum." I shot back, putting the phone in my pocket.

"Very funny, Dan." Phil punched me lightly in the arm. We stepped off the lift into the brisk Manchester air. "I just realized something." Phil said, stopping just outside the door of our building. I groaned, my body wilting as I turned to face him. "Whatever it is, we can take care of it later! Come on, we're shopping!" I insisted. "Dan, we never drank any of the coffee I made." Phil pointed out. "Yes we - Oh, I guess we didn't." I resolved. A quick jaunt down the street to Starbucks fixed that problem.

"What do you want?" I asked, knowing full well what Phil would say. He rolled his eyes.

"Dan. We've been coming here for years, you should know what I order by now. Small caramel macchiatto. I'll wait outside."

I nodded and walked to the counter.

"Two grande caramel macchiattos, please." I asked the barista. "And one of your red velvet cake balls, if you have them."

The barista nodded. "That'll be 15 pounds." I handed her the cash. I chuckled slightly to myself, knowing my plan. I had put a candle and a lighter in my pocket, and I was going to put it in the cake ball and bring it to Phil, singing obnoxiously all the way. The barista handed me our drinks and the cake ball. I stuck the candle in and lit it, walking easily outside with my tongue peeking out of mouth in excitement.

As soon as I got back out onto the street, I started obnoxiously belting 'Happy Birthday' as loudly and off key as I could possibly sing. I could see Phil's eyes widen from across the way where he was standing. He rushed over and clamped a hand over my mouth, hissing "Shhhhhhh!" I smirked and held up the cake pop. "Hmmpm Brmmhmm!" I said through his hand. He made that cute face where he raises his eyebrows and smushes his lips up to one side. "Aww, Dan! Alright, I'm gonna take my hand away now. Do you promise to stay quiet?" Phil asked me, to which I nodded extravagantly. I kept that promise for about two seconds.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR-" I managed, but Phil gave me a playful little shove. Something about where my feet were planted made that tiny little shove send me toppling down to the ground. I felt my head snap back, then I blacked out.
