CHAPTER 4
PHIL'S POV
"Sorry?" He looked confused.
"We live together. In a flat. We're in London." I said. Dan looked at me for a moment, his brows furrowed as if he was thinking very hard. "Okay..." He finally said. "Will you tell me what happened? Why am I here?"
I nodded. "Well, it was my birthday, and we'd been shopping, and you started singing to me completely obnoxiously. You tripped and hit your head, and now here we are."
"Oh." He said. His eyes filled up with tears. "Phil, I'm so sorry. This must be so hard for you, your best friend doesn't know anything about you." His voice broke, and I could tell he was holding back sobs. I frowned, and took his hand in mine.
"Dan." I said quietly. "You're right. This is hard. But I wouldn't change a thing. I'm so glad you woke up."
"Phil?" Dan asked me. The way he said it was different from before. It was...empty somehow. "I'm sorry, but I don't even remember graduating high school."
"So close..." I chuckled humorlessly to myself. "What?" Dan asked, as I hadn't said it for him to hear. "We met in your twelfth year is all."
I explained.
"Oh. God, Phil I'm so-"
"Don't. You. Dare." I cut him off. "I know exactly what you are going to say. I don't want to hear you apoligise for the situation we are in. This is absolutely, one thousand percent, not your fault." I looked down at our hands, still clasped tightly together. "It's mine, actually..." My voice faltered a bit as I realised that Dan had made absolutely no attempt to pull away. Dan must've noticed me looking, because he instantly tensed up and retracted his arms with a shy grin. I couldn't tell if I felt disappointed or not. After all, he didn't even know who I was. I felt my eyes widen a little hearing it from myself. My best friend had no idea who I was. I slumped into the back of the chair.
"So...tell me about us." Dan suggested.
"Well..." I started. This could take a while. "You remember YouTube, right?" I asked, and grinned when he nodded. "We're actually quite famous now. We've got a show on the BBC Radio 1, and your channel recently hit one million subscribers." I smiled widley at his shocked expression.
"One...million?" He asked, obviously disbeliving. I chuckled. I explained quite a bit more about our relationship and career. After a few hours of simply catching Dan up on his life after his eleventh year, I noticed his eyes started drooping.
"Oh, you're tired." I stated. He shook his head.
" 'M not, though." Dan said with a contradictory yawn. I stood, shaking my head playfully.
"No, get some sleep." I said with a grin, moving towards the door.
"No, Phiiiil," he whined, saying my name like nothing had changed. The tone of his voice struck me with an unbearable feeling of nostalgia. "Stay." He whispered, but his eyes were already closed. I walked away from the door and back to where Dan lay, already peacefully asleep. I stroked my thumb across his forehead and trailed my fingers down his face.
"Tomorrow, we start over." I whispered, and left. I decided I should straighten up around the flat a bit, considering I hadn't been there for nearly a month, and Dan was coming home tomorrow. I decided I should call PJ and Chris. Peej answered on the first ring.
"Phil? Is everything alright?" He sounded concerned.
"Everything is great, Peej. Is Chris with you? Can you put it on speaker phone?" I asked, grinning widely.
"Sure." Peej agreed, and I heard him tap his phone.
"Hey, Phil." Chris said. "What's up?"
"Guys, Dan's awake." Immediately, they were both talking over eachother.
"What, seriously?"
"When, how?"
"That's fantastic!"
"Can we talk to him?"
"Woah, slow down." I chuckled. "For one, right now he's sleeping. And for two, he has memory loss. I honestly don't know if he will remember you two. He doesn't remember me. I've spent my whole day talking to him, just telling him about his life. He doesn't remember graduating high school."
"Oh." Peej whispered.
"Yeah. So maybe, after Dan gets settled back in at the flat, you guys could come over and introduce yourselves to him."
"Okay, Phil." PJ said.
"Let us know if any thing changes." Chris said, and they hung up. I left the hospital and headed home.
