Chapter 10

Finding Angels Wings

Ava'

Saturday

I stood quietly at the doorway of the stoop, Dante leaned over the railing and his fingers were playing with a necklace.  I took a tentative step forward, not really sure what to do. I’ve never really been in a situation like this before. I’ve never had time for feelings, or for comforting someone. Sure a pat on the back and a thumbs up was right up my alley, but this, this seemed so much more different. Somehow I don’t think the awkward pat and thumbs up would help. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. My mouth was dry it was as if I swallowed a cotton ball. I took another step forward and watched Dante’s movements.

“What are you doing here Ava?” he asked his voice low and raspy. I bit my lip, unable to form any words.  I tried to speak again but I couldn’t, I coughed and straightened my shoulders.

“I wanted to make sure that you were okay,” I said softly. Looking anywhere but his face and my gaze landed on the fang he was playing with and I looked at it curiously. I casted my eyes up briefly and his burning blue gaze caught my own, locking me and keeping my attention. I swallowed nervously as he took a few steps forward towards me. My breathing caught in my throat and I eyed him nervously.

He shrugged and tossed the fang under his shirt, lifting up the sleeves to pull his shirt backwards. “As you can see, I’m fucking dandy.” His voice was laced with sarcasm and I found myself frowning. Sure we didn’t have the best of relationship towards each other and I admit I might feel something towards him, but why does he have to be so rude?

I crossed my arms and glared at him, “No need to be so damn rude.”

He cocked his eyebrow at me and looked down at me, yes looked down. Damn bastard was taller than me, by more than a head. I ignored our height difference and squared my shoulders, lifting my chin up and glaring daggers at him. He  stooped down a bit lower towards me, glaring at me as well.

“I thought you were here to help me, not insult me,” he seemed angrier than before and I was wondering what the hell brought on this sudden mood change.

“Well I was trying but you’re so damn rude and sarcastic I’m rethinking my decision!” I said equally as angry as him as I stood up on my tip toes to get right in his face, the distance not really bothering me until he took a sharp intake of breath and his eyes lowered towards my neck.

“Ava,” he warned and lifted his hand up. His fingers placed on the side of my neck. I gasped softly and stared at him, an unreadable expression on my face.

“What are you doing?” I asked, glancing down at those fingers on my neck, shivering slightly as he moved them across my collarbone. I glanced up again at Dante’s eyes and instead of those piercing blue orbs , I found a dark obsidian. I didn’t really know what I was feeling now, his fingers on me sparked something and I was suddenly nervous. I lowered  my feet and I was staring at his chest, directly at the outlining of the fang.

“Don’t get so worked up, I can literally see the blood pumping right under your skin. It’s hard to control myself,” he whispered, leaning closer towards me. Please don’t sniff me, please don’t sniff me! I stood stock still, my breathing coming out slightly harder at his close proximity. I was rooted to the spot. All I wanted to do was come here to help him, not end up this close to him!
