Chapter 16

Ava

My tears soaked his shirt, I held on tightly to his shoulders. I felt pathetic. I felt weak. My body was heaving up and down because of my sobs. I hiccuped loudly. So many emotions, I just had so many. They didn't want to stay hidden, they just came tumbling out like a hurricane. I sniffed and clung tighter to Calyx shirt.

I was lying almost on top of him. His breathing had evened out. I cannot believe I did that. I felt a hand reach up and touch my hair, I opened my eyes and looked at Calyx. My eyes puffy and red, my nose most likely running, my eyes bloodshot and crazed.

"It's going to be ok, sweetheart." He rasped. I let out a strangled sob as I clutched to his chest.

"I'm so sorry, sorry, I'm so sorry." I cried.

*Calyx held me tightly. They tried to take me away from him today, they tried to separate us. I refused, I screamed, I wailed. I fought. It's my fault Calyx was sitting here with a busted up face and body.

The cold floor seeped into my bones, making me shiver. The flimsy dress I was given was doing nothing to keep me warm. Goosebumps etched their way across my skin. I pushed myself further into Calyx's body. I felt him wince. I pulled away quickly, staring at him, my eyes wide.

"I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry," I gasped, staring at him as he hissed in pain. Gingerly he touched his side, they probably broke his ribs. I could feel my lip trembling. I sat in the far corner, my legs drawn up to my chest. My wings tucked into my back. My eyes were glassy as I stared at him.

Calyx's Panther was out, his eyes swirled with a golden colour, bright and dazzling. He slowly crept forward to me. "It's going to be ok, sweetheart." He murmured, beckoning me to him.

I wiped a hand across my face, "I don't want to hurt you." I murmured softly. My voice shaking. I was visibly trembling. Calyx crept forward, he bit his lip in pain. His lip was split and there was dark purple bruising along his jaw. It's all my fault. Stop throwing yourself a pity party Ava! I scolded myself.

I slowly inched my way towards Calyx, he grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me in close. His chin was resting on my scraggly hair. He breathed in deep. I knew my scent calmed him.

I had watched, how they held him down. Those burly men. They struck him again and again, they laughed as his bones crunched under their fists. Calyx didn't make a sound. He bit his lip the entire time, his eyes focusing on a spot on the wall. This made them angrier, they hit him even harder. They jeered at him, spitting at him, belittling him. They were laughing again. I thought they were going to kill him.

I freaked, I started screaming, thrashing about. I was silenced with a hard punch to my face. I fell to the floor in a heap. I wish I was stronger, I wish, I was stronger so I could help Calyx. He growled then, seeing me on the floor triggered something. His growl was deep and resonated off the cells walls. It chilled me to the bone. It was so primal, so dangerous. I cowered even further into the floor.

He kicked now, yelling and screaming. He wouldn't let them touch me. I didn't know why he cared so much, but he did. They beat him unconscious. They beat a fourteen year old boy unconscious. The act sickened me. I was only twelve, I was tiny for my age.

I sat next to him, stroking his face, willing his wounds to heal. Just hoping he would wake up. When they brought in the food, I saved mine for him. I would rather starve. I could survive, it was Calyx I was worried about. I thought he had died. My little body trembled as I clutched to him.
