Finding Angels Wings

Chapter 1

A crimson trail followed me as I stumbled forward, images of what had happened tonight flashed through my mind. My body was weak and battered, yet I walked on. The tears that had trailed down my face had dried, leaving tell tale signs in their wake. I clutched my bear by its arm as I carried on walking through the streets of my small neighbourhood, my small bag thrown across my back.

The moon shone down upon me, illuminating my small form as I walked aimlessly, lost, without a hope. I was scared, I wanted my mama back.

Mama would want me to be strong though, I’m her soldier I won’t let her down.

Images of her face were embedded in my mind. Her face filled with so much pain and sorrow. I scrunched my eyes up tight.

Mama would want me to be strong.

“Quickly Dante, climb into your safe place. Go my child, go!” my mother’s urgent voice rang loudly in my ears as I looked around nervously at our small, wooden home. I could feel the tension in the air they were coming I just knew it. My mother’s face which was always kind and caring was filled with a fierce determination know as she ushered me towards my room. Her creamy coloured wings flapped slightly, she was agitated.

She pushed me into my room and tossed my teddy bear towards me. I immediately snuggled closer to it, my body seeking its comfort. She roughly pushed my bed from its corner and grabbed the latch onto the floor. She lifted up the little wooden door and gently pushed me down into my safe place.

With a soft peck she spoke softly to me, her voice cracking slightly, “Be strong my little soldier, be strong for mama .No matter what you hear, stay in your safe place.” With tears streaming down her face, she pushed me down and closed the latch. I was surrounded by darkness. Finally the seriousness of the situation finally settled in. My seven year old body could not handle the stress and I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

Mama was out somewhere in the house and bad men were coming for her. It wasn’t like the other times when mama forced me into the safe house, no. This time it was real, this time she may not come back. I snuggled even closer to my teddy bear; Jojo. Mama said I have to be strong, so I mustn’t cry, crying is for small boys and I'm her solider. I can’t cry now. Reaching out and feeling blindly in the little space I was in, I located the lamp. I switched it on and the little space was illuminated in a soft white glow. In the corner of the place there were stacks of cans and sweets along with lots of water.

I sighed, my breath coming out in shaky half pants. I hope mama comes back.

My sobs slowly died down and the silence of the room almost became deafening, I could literally hear my own heart beating wildly in my chest, my fingers were cramping from holding onto my bear so tightly. What I heard next shocked me to the core. It was the loud, blood curdling scream of my mother as she begged for mercy.
