WARNING: Again, sorry to ruin it a bit... but this is a pretty gory/disturbing chapter. Don't read on if you think it might upset you or something! ):
Chapter Thirteen
*** Skylar ***
Getting a bunch of noisy teenage kids over a rickety fence when it's going dark is one hell of a task. It was worse than sneaking past Mrs. Cane (which had gone successfully, thank God. She'd been snoring her head off in front of the TV).
"Joseph, stop swearing! For God's sake, someone's gonna hear!" Hissed Andre, scowling up at his twin. Joseph was making a huge palaver out of getting over the fence, stopping every five seconds to curse and rearrange his hair. Even Charlie was beginning to look a bit annoyed, and he was the calmest person present.
Why did Joseph have to get his panties in a twist over something as simple as climbing over a bloody fence? I seriously doubted that he and Andre were actually related sometimes. Joseph was an arrogant, cocky, over-confident jerk, and Andre...well. Andre was just Andre.
I pulled my thoughts away from the twins and fixed my eyes on the moon, trying to control my impatience towards Joseph. I must not yell at him. I must not yell at him. I must not yell at him...
Finally, after another few minutes of faffing and fussing about, Joseph dropped down on the other side of the fence. We all sighed in relief. I gave Charlie a leg up, and then scrambled up after him. Andre was close behind, and from there it took us no time at all to organise ourselves again and set off.
It was almost dark by this point, and so we'd brought torches to help us search. I was hoping Corinne would be hiding in an old building or something, somewhere where the other street kids usually hung out. Thinking about her there with them made my insides twist around uncomfortably. No ten year old should be out in the middle of town on their own, not without and adult to look after them. There were so many bad things that could have happened to her already...
"Sky, relax." Andre whispered, sending me a sympathetic smile. I tried to smile back, but it felt more like a grimace.
"Sorry..." I mumbled, looking down at the ground. My thoughts immediately returned to Corinne again and where she might be, what might be happening to her...
"Sky, you're doing it again..." He said, letting out a small sigh. I frowned and shook my head to clear the nasty thoughts away, trying to block them out of my mind.
"Sorry."
"Quit apologizing." He chuckled softly, grabbing my hand and squeezing it. The contact sent warm waves of comfort through me, and I was able to let my muscles loosen up just a tiny bit. "We'll find her." He said, and I just nodded.
Behind us I could hear Charlie and Felix discussing something in furious whispers, but I ignored them. Felix was probably trying to sell some weed to Charlie or something stupid like that. He'd soon find out that Charlie would have none of it.
"How much further?" Whispered Hannah, a willowy fifteen year old with wavy blond hair that fell way past her shoulders. I looked around us, taking in our surroundings.
"Uhm...Not far now, I don't think. We're on the very outskirts of town, and the first of the derelict buildings is coming up on the left." I said. She grinned at me and nodded, slipping back to walk beside one of her friends again. From what I knew of her she was a quiet girl, and she never really got into all that much trouble. She was sensible.
