Chapter Seventeen
*** Runt ***
"Dude...She's not gonna come. Can we please go now?" Whined Kevin, one of the other street kids who'd tagged along with me. He sat on a log in the small clearing we were in, picking his nose and fidgeting. I mean, I've got nothing against the nose picking, but did he HAVE to fidget? It was driving me crazy.
"No! Shut up and sit still." I hissed, peeking out through the bushes that surrounded us again.
We were just outside the orphanage Rin had mentioned as her old home once or twice, and we'd been sitting there for at least an hour now. Kevin mumbled something under his breath and made a big show of stomping off to have a pea behind a nearby oak tree, creating as much noise as he could.
Resisting the urge to grab a branch and shove it somewhere Kevin would find extremely painful, I squatted down again and stuck my head through the bushes yet again.
It was almost nine o'clock now, several hours since Rin and her weird friends had returned from the hospital. Surely that Barbie lookalike I'd given the note to would have delivered it to her by now? She'd certainly had enough time to get off her silly butt and find her. So that left only one reason why Rin wasn't coming out to see me...
She was ignoring me.
But...we were friends...weren't we? Why would she ignore me like this?
Almost immediately I found myself remembering her calling my name, screaming for help as that tramp dragged her off into the bushes...and I hadn't been able to help her. No matter how fast I ran, how much I pushed myself, it just hadn't been enough.
By the time I'd reached the clearing, some older kids were already there, as well as an ambulance. There'd been a tall dark haired girl with blood trickling down her neck, a blond boy unconscious on the ground and another blond boy who looked exactly the same as the other one (only a little less bloody) being dragged off by one of the paramedics.
I hadn't saved her...They had. Rin must think that I'd been ignoring her screams, and now she hated me...
Mentally shaking myself, I realised that Kevin had returned and was now staring at me with a bored expression on his face.
"She's not coming...Let's go." I muttered, already slipping back through the trees towards the road. I heard Kevin chuckle underneath his breath and stumble after me, tripping over every other log he tried to step over. Even Rin hadn't been that clumsy, and she'd spent most of her life living in the lap of luxury (indoors).
"That girl was stupid anyway, just forget her." He muttered, tripping over yet another log.
Oh, like he could talk! He thought two plus two was three, and that every single number after ten ended in 'teen'. Kevin was older than me, too, so he really had no excuse as to why he hadn't stolen a few early learning books and done a bit of self-tutoring.
"Yeah." I replied, agreeing with him even though I thought he was stupid. It was best just to forget her...making friends had been stupid in the first place. I should have known from past experiences that people never stuck around for long.
