Wyatt Thomas ("Tom") Johnson, President LBJ's Press secretary, telephoned Walter Cronkite while he was ON AIR as he did the "CBS Evening News"; Cronkite was taken aback by the news of the former President's death from an heart attack, that he broke into programming, informed his producers, and went onto a "Special Announcement".
"It is my sad duty to inform the American people, that President LBJ has passed away from a heart attack. Despite the problems of Vietnam, he made sure that we, as Americans, we're safe. I am deeply upset at this news...On top of the growing news that is affecting President Nixon over Watergate...
"As a man who has seen what ill will we've had since President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, and Attorney-General Robert "Bobby" Kennedy in 1968, and Senator Edward "Teddy" Kennedy's controversy in Chappaquiddick in 1969, when Mary Jo Kopechne drowned at the beginning of 1970, we're not immune to the Kennedys' way of life. And, for all their excesses, nothing can come close to Watergate; nothing.
"As we go to air tonight, can the American people really appreciate our growing distaste at President Nixon's arrogance? Can we, as a country, deal with the Vietcong? Can we deal with civil rights? Can we progress as a Nation? Do we need Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, two rookie journalists, to inform us that the President is corrupt? Only time will tell if we can be saved".

The scandal that plagued The Nixon Presidency was so dark that, by August of 1974, as President Nixon, resigned in disgrace...and Vice Precident Spiro Agnew was labelled, quote, "One of the 10 worst Vice Presidents in US political history", unquote.
