Her fingers interlocked with mine as we walked on the sidewalk. We were talking and laughing and having fun.

The only thing I could think about was how beautiful she was.

Her long beautiful blonde hair that fell just above her waist. Her gorgeous glowing green eyes that always brightened my day. Her perfectly imperfect teeth that were barely crooked, but the fact that she embraced it was even more beautiful. She was beautiful in every way.

"Were you even listening to me?" She asked me. I realized that I had ignored everything she said.

I smiled and laughed a little. "I'm sorry. I was just thinking about your beauty. What were you saying?"

She was obviously flattered and flustered as I had caught her off guard. She laughed and then had to think about what she said before. "I asked you about what you wanted to do for your birthday," she finally explained.

"It doesn't matter to me. As long as I spend the day with you."

She laughed. "Stop it with these lines. They're sweet and all but they're really cheesy."

"I'm just being honest," I explained to her innocently. "Would you rather have me lie to you?"

"Liam, you know how much I adore honesty," she said stopping in her tracks and turning to face me. "So I guess I can't be mad at you for telling the truth."

I kissed her softly on the lips. "You better not be mad at me."

She turned to look towards her house which we stopped in front of. "I don't want to go. It's so comforting being around you." She rested her head on my chest and hugged me.

"I know, Emma," I said wrapping my arms around her. "You just have to push through it for one more week and everything will start to get better."

Emma's parents had recently gotten a divorce. Her dad was in the process of moving out so she usually came home to her parents arguing about something stupid while her father was trying to pack. It absolutely drove her crazy and she couldn't stand it any longer so she tried as hard as possible to stay away from them.

"I love you," she said to me.

"I love you, too," I said back to her before I let her go.

After she walked into the house, I walked to my house which was only a couple blocks away but in a nicer neighborhood than Emma's.

Emma's parents never were very wealthy and her mom basically supported them all so they couldn't spend money on a nice house and ended up in a bad neighborhood that isn't the safest place.

I, on the other hand, live in a wealthy neighborhood with big houses and big yards. We live in a bigger sized house that has more rooms than we will ever need and I find it very unnecessary. My parents, on the other hand, love to show that they have a lot of money so they buy expensive things that they will most likely never use but buy them because they can.

Once I got home, I set my backpack on the floor by the stairs so I could pick it up when I went up to my room. I looked around at what seemed to be an empty house but I knew my parents were probably off somewhere. "I'm home!" I yelled.

A couple seconds later, I heard my mother's heels thumping on the ground. When she was finally in sight I saw her holding the house phone to her ear and speaking softly. When she was finally standing in front of me, she hung up the phone. "Hello, sweetie," she said to me cheerfully.

"Hi. Who were you on the phone with?" I asked her inquisitively.

She smiled. "That was actually what I was just going to talk to you about." She sighed and thought about how she was going to phrase her words then finally spoke. "You remember my old friend from high school, Janice, right?" She asked.

I hadn't really remembered and she could tell by my face of confusion.

"Remember, she came over a couple of years ago and brought her husband, Kieth, and daughter, Elaina."

Once she said her name, it was like all of the memories had instantly replayed in my mind. Of course, I remember her. How could I ever forget her? We spent most of the summer together when her family came over and stayed. She was my first true love, but no one ever knew that except her and me. "Uh, yeah. I think I remember them," I said trying to make it seem like I hadn't thought of her for years.

Her grin instantly turned to a frown and she again thought about how to phrase her words. "Well, a month or so ago, she and her family were in a major car accident. They were all in the car and were killed on impact." I couldn't believe what she was saying. I didn't want to believe that they had died. "Except Elaina," she continued.

I looked at her with a mixture of relief and sorrow. I didn't know what to say. My thoughts were all over the place. "She's an orphan?" That's all I could manage to say.

My mother nodded her head and I could see her eyes start to tear up. "She was the only one who survived, but she had gruesome injuries and a concussion. She was in the hospital for a couple of weeks to recover."

"So she's okay?" I asked with relief.

She nodded. "She's fine."

I was so ecstatic. I couldn't explain how happy I was to hear that she survived a horrible car accident.

"However, she doesn't have much more family around to take care of her. Both of her parents were only children and her grandparents have either passed or are in nursing homes. She really doesn't have anywhere else to go."

"Well, where is she going to live?" I asked. It would be horrible if she was put into foster care especially after a car accident.

She sighed. "Her parents wrote in their will before they passed that if anything happened to them and no one else could take care of Elaina, then they wanted us to take her."

"She's going to be living here?" I asked. I was happy that she was alive but I was worried about what might happen between us if she were to come back. I finally got my life back on track and I didn't want anyone or anything to disrupt it because of an old crush.

"I know you might be uncomfortable with it, but she has nowhere else to go and I don't want her going into foster care. She's a really nice young lady and I really don't think she'll be a bother."

"I know mom, you have to do this."

My mother rested her hand on my shoulder. "Sweetie, I know this will be a huge adjustment, but we will get through it. Plus we have another person to fill a spot in this house."

I just simply nodded. "It's fine mom. It really is." I walked over towards the stairs and grabbed my backpack. "I'm gonna go upstairs and do my homework."

I rushed up the stairs to my room and all I could think about was Elaina. Did she still have the same feelings I had for her or did I mess that up the last time I saw her? Did she even remember what happened between us or did she force herself to forget everything? How would I explain this to Emma?
