It was late, kind of windy, and the rain had left everything feeling very chilly I guess but it was a good night. A "let's go out after shift for some coffee and just talk" kind of night .
"Do you have to go home right after our shift?" Watson's message was glaring at me, just like she would when we got into heated conversations or mini debates. (Funnily one was about a couple in a car asking for directions, her adamant answer was that they were married and I maintained that they weren't, I lost this one...) Her dark brown eyes fiercely focused on me as her voice became sternly strict, I thought that I could even hear her then.
"I guess I could spare a few minutes Watson, I'll just tell my sister about it." My younger sister, was indeed a strict girl, and she loved to dote on me and wait for me. So, if ever I would be late, I mean later than eleven pm, I'd have to tell her about it.
"She's sweet. <3 Hope she says yes!" A fingers crossed emoticon had followed. I kind of laughed and wondered if my sister would indeed say yes. I had messaged her via my phone after a few minutes and she replied just so quickly after.
"Of course you can stay out, just take care and see you later! Don't forget to buy chips for me. :)" This girl loved to abuse my kindness and care for her.
"We'll see. No more junk food after eleven. I'll see you." I replied and quickly tapped on my keyboard telling Watson what my sister's response was and just as soon as I had pressed the "Enter" key, a ping and reply had followed.
"I knew it! :D Told you she'd say yes!" I was holding back a really loud laugh with my hand as I saw a familiar figure pass by my desk and headed towards the hallway in front of me. Black and white stripped sweater, blond tipped hair hiding half of it as it swayed side to side, and dark blue jeans not just fitted right which showed light brown doll shoes at the bottom. She turned around just so I could clearly see her beaming smile directed at me. It was an hour before our shift would end, and I had caught myself feeling excited to leave the office.
As soon as we had sent our last reports for the day, I hurriedly shut down my laptop and walked towards her cubicle. Most of the other employees had already cleared out by this time, and I knew that Watson always too a lot of time prepping to go home. When I reached the entrance of her cube, I noticed she still had hear headset on, listening to some familiar tune as I tapped her on the back.
"Oh! Parker, you're done with your reports?" Taking of the headset she closed her media player application and hurriedly shut down her computer.
"It was no hassle, no issues today Watson." I was amused by her rushing movements to keep all her things. "What song were you listening to?"
"Train good sir." She replied placing her cellphone in her sling bag as she faced me, smiling and ready to go.
"'If it's Love' or 'Hey, Soul Sister'?" I asked casually as I took out my flip phone and checked the time, it was eleven seven right now, I guess she didn't take too long after all. Watson was eerily silent as we walked past the empty cubicles nearing the entrance with every step we would take. I looked behind me and saw her deep in thought, the moment she noticed me staring at her she spoke.
"Parker, you're staring." She shook her head slightly and smiled as her countenance lightened
"Oh, I didn't mean to, you were just so deep in thought, I was wondering what about."
"Hey, Soul Sister." She replied quietly, grinning as she walked past me.
"Ain't that mister mister?" I called back, trying to catch up to her.
"On the radio, stereo, the way you move ain't fair you know!" She half sang back as we both reached the bio metrics machine, me placing my finger on it and logging out before her. (Yes, the way I move ain't fair.)
"Hey, Soul Sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do." I sang fully as I stepped out of the office, my arms stretched out as I turned around to see her just finishing.
"Tonight!" She exclaimed as I shut off the last lights in the office and started to lock the door. We started the familiar chant of 'hey's in that song as we waited for the elevator. We, the last occupants of this building, glad and ecstatic that it is indeed, after shift.
