I was almost taken aback by how much we would talk. I'd assumed that I was dreaming, delusional, maybe had overdosed a bit on asthma maintenance meds."You'll be out for a while?" My message popped up as soon as I sent it on our Skype chat.
Ms. Watson is typing... And with the familiar ping, her reply came in.
"Will attend a wedding of my good friend. I won't be gone for long though. :)" A smiley at the end of her message, and frankly I could see her smiling right there in front of me. (Delusional.... I know...)
"I see." I replied back quickly. And after about two seconds of thought, my fingers moved automatically, typing out the question bouncing off the corners inside my head.
"Then, can I have your number? For, emergency things I guess, if you wanna extend your absence or leave?" As soon as I sent it, I was definitely tempted to delete the message.
A minute passed by and yes, I felt like an idiot. I KILLED OUR CONVERSATION! I could hear my own despaired voice saying this over and over again as I stared at the keyboard feeling regretful, idiotic...
PING
With that familiar sound, I looked up to my amazement and see something unexpected. I stare at the dimmed screen of my laptop, bewildered by the message Watson sent me. I could not believe that she had simply given me her digits as I had simply asked her.
"Sure Parker. Here it is:" And with that message I was, how would you put it, ecstatic, shocked and a bit dizzy. It was indeed a very good Friday, TGIF was not even enough to express my happiness.
We talked more during the breaks and laughed about my inability to handle spicy food well, as she frequently bought Korean snacks and food at the stall outside our office building. I noticed a big backpack at the foot of her chair as I accompanied her back after her break.
"That's quite the beast there Watson." I eyed the dark blue bag that looked full to bursting then. It actually looked as big as she was, maybe you could even fit her inside I supposed.
"Wedding Parker, you know women need a lot of things for those." She just poked the bag a bit and smiled at me while I nodded in acknowledgement, I didn't want to pry further.
"Can you carry that though?" I asked, shifting my eyes between the backpack and her petite frame and I'm sure I started to frown a bit as I thought of her lugging that bag around alone.
"I'm a strong girl Parker, I did take wushu for a few years back, I can handle it." She replied beaming at me, and I was once more caught in a state of awe as this information had surprised me beyond expectation. And a gasp with a very low "Wow." was all that escaped my breath. She laughed and I smiled as I returned to my station a minute after, still wondering how I made a friend like her.
The end of our shift came quickly and soon I saw her get on the elevator as I locked up our office (Yep, I held the keys for closing it.), before the mint green doors of the elevator closed though, I saw the hurried movement of a waving arm and a beautiful face with blond tipped hair following it.
"I'll see you soon Parker!" She said smiling as she retreated back into the lift.
"Real soon Watson." I replied checking the doors of the office entrance.
I left too after a while, and as soon as I reached the ground floor, I remembered something extremely important. One thing that I had, which could define the next three days as something magnificent once more. I opened my flip phone (Sorry, I was a cheapskate then so no Android phone until much much later), and I quickly searched for the latest number I had saved.
Finding it almost immediately, I had blankly stared at it wondering, "Should I? Or shouldn't I?" What I would do next though, had indeed defined our whole relationship and had brought it to what it is today, and I'm pretty glad that I did it.
