I actually get asked this more than I expected! (laughs).
I think any writer will agree that there's no real source of inspiration. It just comes from different places in different times. For example what inspired me for the first book in the Afterlife series, No Way in Heaven or Hell (available here, hint hint) was a picture I saw online. However for Four Elements, I'm not really sure what it came from. I'd done a first attempt at it a few years ago (which I was very upset to lose when my flashdrive got broken/lost, but think it's probably for the best as I wouldn't have had the ideas I had for the current version), and I eventually felt like reviving the project, but I couldn't say where the idea stemmed from precisely.
It just depends on the story, the person, the moment, the mood... it's a very imprecise bit of magic, but I love it all the same.
I will say one thing, though. Often, music helps me when I'm writing. Not exactly by giving me ideas, but when I'm writing a romantic scene for example or a fight scene, I listen to the music I imagine for the "movie soundtrack" and it helps me picture the scene more easily. So don't try and copy others for inspiration. Look for your own inspiration. We all have imagination, you just need to let it out.
What are/were your writing inspirations?
