Uhm. Which one? (laughs). Just joking. Well, here goes.
"Well, we can't know there's nothing to do until we try!"
– Eliana to Laera, No Way in Heaven or Hell.
I'd first considered putting a different quote, but I thought if some of you hadn't read it yet, it might be a bit of a spoiler. And also, this one is very important to me, because it's easy to let fear get to you. When you're not sure of yourself, you easily find arguments to back out of doing something you love or want to do.
I, for instance, was nervous about entering No Way in Heaven or Hell for the Watty Awards in 2014. What if no one read it? Worse, what if people hated it?
And then, that summer, I saw my book in the "Undiscovered Gems" winner list. I first thought it was just a runner up award, and was already thrilled to have reached that level against stories more popular than mine.
My excitement dropped somewhat when despite winning a Watty, the book didn't seem to have aroused any more interest than before when Madeline Stanford, who wrote "Like Hell", winning a publishing contract, had seen her numbers rocket upwards. Was my book not that good after all? But it had won an award, that had to mean something!
And then, early this year, No Way was featured in Fantasy. And this time, the numbers did jump up significantly for a time, nearly tripling in a few weeks. And the feedback has been pretty encouraging, so I'm trying not to worry too much about the numbers (though we all want to hit the millions bar like others have, let's be honest).
I can't wait to read quotes from your books!
