“Good, Russetpaw. Now just try to be quicker. Deerpaw, next time have more power in your swipe. Yes like that!" Sparkclaw instructed from the edge of the training hollow.

Deerpaw and Russetpaw were practicing fighting while Lifepaw awaited her turn next to Sparkclaw, Forestheart, and Tumblefire. With a heave, Russetpaw flung Deerpaw to the ground and pinned her. She wriggled under his weight.

"Good job!" Sparkclaw praised, "Now Deerpaw and Lifepaw, while fighting, try to focus on moves that knock your opponent off balance." Lifepaw nodded and padded into the center of the training hollow. The grass was soft under paw.

Deerpaw was crouched low at the other side of the clearing. Then, like lightning, she sprang from her stance and ran at Lifepaw with full speed. Lifepaw quickly leaped out of the way.

"Next time use a counter attack Lifepaw!" Tumblefire yowled. Before she could look back to her mentor, Deerpaw was barreling towards her. She leaped to the side again, but this time she held out a paw. Deerpaw tripped over her paw and lay on the ground.

Lifepaw pinned her down and looked to the warriors to see their expressions. They all looked impressed

"Great job Lifepaw!" Tumblefire purred, "You did that counter attack perfectly." Lifepaw bounced slightly at the praise.

"Now you three can go rest. We will hunt tomorrow." Forestheart meowed. They padded back through the forest until they reached camp. Lifepaw and her litter mates padded over to the fresh kill pile. To Lifepaw's dismay, it was lower than usual. There was only a magpie, a scrawny vole, and a torn up squirrel. Russetpaw took the squirrel and Deerpaw took the vole.

"Should we share?" Lifepaw asked.

"No. Forestheart said we would hunt tomorrow. The clan will be fine." Deerpaw meowed before lying down in a patch of sun with her vole. Lifepaw shook her head. Greedy mousebrains.

Hunger clawed at Lifepaw's belly as she dragged magpie over to the elders den. Squirrelfur slept in his nest snoring loudly.

"Here's a magpie." Lifepaw meowed and dropped the magpie in front of Squirrelfur. He looked up at her and gratefully nibbled at the juicy piece of prey. He took one last bite and pushed the remainder away.

"You need it more than me." Squirrelfur mewed feebly. Lifepaw was about to protest, but realized that she would need to eat. She nodded and dragged the prey over to her siblings. They had just finished their prey and were sharing tongues.

"Oh hi Lifepaw!" Deerpaw greeted.

"Hi." Lifepaw responded. She ate the last of the magpie. It barely filled her belly, but it took away the worst of the hunger. A cold breeze ruffled her fur.

"This leaf-bare isn't going to be forgiving." Nightwhisker whispered to Morningsong. The pretty she cat nodded in agreement.

Lifepaw stared at the already browning leaves. It won't be forgiving, will it.

She was snapped out of her thoughts when Swiftstep hurtled into the clearing. Everyone's attention was focused on her.

She yowled loudly, "Thunderclan is attacking us!"
