Lifepaw sat up in her nest. The first light of dawn had not yet pierced through the trees, making everything seem as dark as night. Flamepaw had moved back to his nest after he had been released from the medicine cat den and slept next to Ivypaw reluctantly. Lifepaw prodded Flamepaw lightly. He groaned and blinked open his eyes.
"Wha-" Flamepaw mewed. Lifepaw raised her tail to tell him to be silent. He nodded and stood up.
"Follow me." Lifepaw whispered and slipped out of the apprentice's den. Ivypaw stirred slightly, but never woke up. They padded out of camp silently, managing to avoid Nightwhisker's watchful eye.
Once they had neared the river, Flamepaw spoke, "So, what do you want?"
"I've found a rabbit hole. It leads to the other side of the river!" Lifepaw replied and beckoned to the deep burrow, "Let's explore!" Lifepaw leaped into the hole. Flamepaw followed, excited to be one of the first to cross the river. Lifepaw felt her whiskers rub against either side of the tunnel. She became nervous when the rushing of water became louder overhead. To her relief, she scrambled out of the hole and shook clods of dirt from her pelt.
Lifepaw scented the air. It had an unrecognizable smell that lingered in the air. She shook her head and tried to ignore the stench. Flamepaw scrambled out of the tunnel, his eyes shining with excitement. I've finally done something right!
"So what should we do?" Lifepaw asked. Flamepaw looked at her and playfully tackled her. Lifepaw threw him off and pounced on him. She pummeled his head lightly and jumped off. He tackled her to the ground and pinned her triumphantly.
"I got you!" Flamepaw teased. Lifepaw wriggled under his weight and found no success.
"You have to eat less!" Lifepaw bantered. He playfully cuffed her and let her get up. They exchanged glances, but looked away away nervously.
"Should this be...our secret place?" Lifepaw mewed nervously.
Flamepaw purred with delight, "I'd like that."
Lifepaw's eyes lit up. She let out a purr and Flamepaw returned it. The moment seemed to last forever until Flamepaw looked up.
"The patrol will be out soon. Let's go back." he meowed and slipped back into the hole. Lifepaw sighed and followed.
The two apprentices had reached the camp to see the clan sitting around clanrock. Vinestar was perched on top.
"I wonder what's happening." Flamepaw whispered to Lifepaw. She nodded to show that she felt the same. Flamepaw's sister, Lilypaw, sat in front of clanrock proudly. Flamepaw padded over to her while Lifepaw sat down beside Russetpaw and Deerpaw.
"This leaf-bare will be harsh and we need all the warriors we can get," Vinestar began, "Flamepaw and Lilypaw have served to clan well and are ready to become warriors of Lifeclan. Flamepaw, Lilypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." the two apprentices yowled confidently. Their words echoed throughout the hollow.
"I call upon my warrior ancestors to make these worthy apprentices warriors. Flamepaw, you have shown great strength and courage. From this moment on, your name will be Flamestorm. Lilypaw, you have trained well and have shown compassion for your clan. From this moment on, your name will be Lilyflight." Vinestar yowled.
"Flamestorm! Lilyflight!" the clan called loudly. Lifepaw cheered loudest for Flamestorm. He looked at her and smiled when he saw how loud she was trying to be. She blushed and decided to stop trying to be heard. Great starclan, I can't do anything correctly around him!
When the ceremony was finished, Lifepaw padded over to Flamestorm and Lilyflight.
"Congratulations!" Lifepaw purred.
"Thank you!" Lilyflight replied. Deerheart approached the three cats.
"You three will be going to the gathering tonight. Get some rest first though." she meowed and padded away. Lifepaw squealed with excitement. This will be my first gathering!
"You'll love the island!" Flamestorm purred.
"I can't wait!" Lifepaw replied and yawned, "I should probably get some rest. Have fun in the warriors den!" she meowed and bounded over to the apprentices den. Ivypaw smirked at her icily as she slipped into the den. Lifepaw shuddered. That cat has gone crazy! Lifepaw shook the thought away and fell asleep when she heard Ivypaw pad away from the den.
