Lifepaw stalked a juicy squirrel that sat between two roots of a large oak tree that snaked through the dirt. The crunch of a twig alerted the squirrel and it scampered away quickly. Lifepaw hissed with disappointment and looked behind her to see what had made the sound. To her surprise, she saw Flamepaw's orange pelt against a thick wall of bracken.
"Fl-Flamepaw?" she stuttered.
"Lifepaw!" Flamepaw purred, "What are you doing in my dream?" Lifepaw paused for a while then finally answered.
"Well -uh- you know, just, I'm trying to, kind of..." Lifepaw stuttered uncontrollably. Her whole pelt turned hot. Flamepaw purred and padded closer.
"You sound awfully nervous. Would you like to go for a walk?" Flamepaw asked, saving her from not having to speak anymore.
Lifepaw purred with gratitude, "Yes."
The two cats padded through a forest in Starclan that was still in green-leaf. Everything seemed healthy, even Flamepaw had no sign of any wounds.
"So have you been feeling alright?" Lifepaw mewed.
"Well my wound has been hurting, but I feel fine in my dreams." Flamepaw replied, "How has the clan been doing while I've been in the medicine den?"
"Well, Morningsong still hasn't had her kits and Sparkclaw and Lilypaw have been waiting for you to wake up." Lifepaw meowed.
"How about Ivypaw?" Flamepaw asked. Lifepaw's heart sank. They must like each other. She thought desperately for something to say.
"Well, she has, um, just been a bit, a lot...more obnoxious." Lifepaw stumbled over her own words. Flamepaw shook his head.
"I wish she would just leave me alone. She has been too excited to see me. Whenever I leave camp she acts like I've gone to battle." he meowed. Lifepaw's heart skipped a beat. I still have a chance!
"Really! Well, um, if you don't like her, do you like anyone?" Lifepaw mewed cautiously. Flamepaw turned to her.
"I'm only an apprentice. I have time." Flamepaw purred. Lifepaw let her tail droop slightly with disappointment.
"Are you ok?" Flamepaw asked concerned.
"What? Oh yeah, great." Lifepaw replied. He seemed to say something else, but Lifepaw blinked open her eyes before she could hear him.
"Lifepaw, Lifepaw, wake up! We have to tell you what we saw!" Russetpaw and Deerpaw squealed as they prodded her awake. Lifepaw groaned and pulled herself to her feet.
"Follow us!" they mewed and then bounded out of the medicine den. Lifepaw reluctantly followed them out of camp. They headed towards the far border, to the river.
The water gurgled downstream quickly. Lifepaw looked around to see what her siblings thought was so exciting. They stood in front of a large burrow near the river bank.
"What is that?" Lifepaw asked curiously.
"It's a rabbit burrow. It leads to the other side of the river!" Deerpaw meowed happily. Lifepaw gazed into the burrow, only to see it lead down into darkness. Then, the idea hit her. If she showed Flamepaw this he would surely think of her as brave, and that was at least a start.
