"Take a picture, it will last longer."
Bert's voice made me snap my eyes away from the raven-haired girl I had been staring at. I gave my best friend a punch for distracting me and he received the assault with a chuckle.
"You know who she is?" He asked, and I only shook my head in response. His lips drew up into a smirk and he said, "You were just ogling John Gaye's daughter, Brie Gaye."
I felt my jaw drop. "No way! Those pictures on magazines always made her look so frowny and... tiny. But in reality, she's so beautiful and..." I let out a low whistle.
I looked back over and saw her talking to a built man in a suit. Who wears a suit to the beach anyways? That must be her bodyguard, I thought to myself.
"C'mon Ad, heading over to surf. Ten bucks, I'll beat you this time," Bert announced and raced to get his surfboard. I shook my head and laughed out loud.
"You don't learn, do you?" I asked. I searched my pockets to see if I had any spare change on me but I could only pull out a twenty-dollar bill.
Well, Bert will make it thirty dollars, I thought with a smirk.
With one last glance at the brunette, I turned to race after Bert.

The water was clear and cool as I swam on top of my board, waiting for a wave. Bert was on my left doing the same. Sensing the wave, I rose to my feet and drove the surfboard through. The water sprayed over me and formed a tunnel as I surfed.
The thrill ran through me again like it always did whenever I zoomed off on the water. This was my world; the only way I could feel powerful. An escape from all the trouble of not being able to help my loving mother who was falling more ill by the day. The worries of not being able to pay the rents, knowing we'll be thrown out by the end of this month of July.
I laid back again on the surfboard, swimming towards the shore but the sight of two slender hands above the water made me halt. Bert called my name as he swam past me and won the race but I ignored him and dove into the water.
I swam underwater, seeing the vague shape of a girl drowning. The struggling stopped, and I saw her body go limp just as I reached her.
My heart thumped hard as I grabbed her arms and pulled her up. I lifted her small body into my arms as soon as we both were above the water. Looking down at the girl in my arms, I met the pale face of the raven-haired girl.

My mom had always been one to encourage people; remaining optimistic in every situation. Some days, she would tell me,
"Adonis, when you become successful and have everything settled for yourself, you should get a girl. A beautiful girl who would make you happy like you deserve to be. A girl with a dazzling smile and shiny eyes..."
I couldn't help but wonder again at how possible it was that someone would fit accurately with my mom's descriptions.
When Brie Gaye had fluttered her eyes open, her clear hazel eyes made the sun seem duller than a stormy weather. And when she smiled at me in appreciation as her bodyguard guided her away, I felt my ribs contract so hard, I couldn't breathe for a moment.
But the strongest of all was the memory of my lips pressed onto her cold, white ones. Even with her lack of response, it was the one kiss I knew I couldn't forget.
Despite it all, one thing was sure, I couldn't meet her again. People like her didn't associate with people like me. She was a Princess, and I was a Pauper. And this was no fairytale as there were no such thing as those.
