Dream of a Spring Well*
The hilltop house has a burst water main:
water flows from the quaint porch, along
a flagged path, by roots of blossoming thorn,
round latched gatepost, rolling gravel, and then
under conduit of a little paved ditch, down
for a dandelion way until it spills out again,
publicly bubbling, roping, sheeting, plain
through steepening street, a stream. And what does the dream mean?
Is it to wake Joe, say, "Take a leak, Baby."
Always a good opportunity, stirring early. What is this sheet of pain in the belly
I thought long gone? Why do I swallow?
They too are leaving, and spring is autumn.....................
*My mother's house had a burst stopcock, Easter hols, two weeks before C upped and left me. The children and I swept the water out of the door for an hour and a half to save the place.
