Why did Umbridge hate Muggleborns?

Dolores Umbridge was a half-blood. Her mother was magical but she left the young Dolores with her father when Dolores was only three. Her Muggle father often abused and once struck Dolores with a whip. Once Dolores got her Hogwarts letter she thought she could reconcile with her mother only to discover that her mother had been murdered by a Muggle three years previously. This is where her absolute hatred for Muggles and, as a result, Muggleborns.

A/N I don't believe anyone is just evil for evils sake, so I am trying to work out why some characters did what they did. What was Rodolph Lestrange's motive when his wife became besotted with his master? What was Peter Pettigrew's motive to betray his best friend?
