When Snape first heard Trelawney's prophecy, he knew exactly what he was doing by telling Voldemort. The very same day, he had attempted to reconcile with Lily but had been mocked, bullied and all-out threatened by James before Lily even knew he was there. It was anger, jealousy and hate that made him inform Voldemort.

When Snape agreed to protect Harry, he was desperate to prove himself. It was the anniversary of his meeting Lily and he couldn't stop thinking of her and her only remaining heir. It was peace, acceptance and love that made him save Harry.

For a long time after Dumbledore's death, Snape wrestled with himself as to helping Harry or throwing in his work as a double agent and becoming a full Death Eater. In the end love saved Harry Potter. Snape's love for Lily drove him to the end. And Snape died gazing at the eyes identical to his love.
