The New Player

Meeting Vanessa

We started walking down to meet Vanessa. Alex looked uncomfortable the entire walk down. Maybe she was jealous of how Tobin reacted.

I smiled. "Talex forever." I whispered.

We were on the field now. Vanessa was playing with one of the teammates.

"Christina, don't forget about last time!" Vanessa screamed through laughs. Christina was tickling her.

This girl, she looked even better up close, which is rare. Her teeth were so bright it almost hurt my eyes. Her eyes were just as bright. They glistened like I've never seen.

"Vanessa Krome?" Hope called out.

Vanessa looked over, and immediately stopped playing. Her eyes widened.

"Y-y-you're Hope Solo!" Vanessa exclaimed.

"Haha, yes." Hope laughed.

"And you guys are part of the national team!" Vanessa said in awe. She looked like she was staring at the coolest people in the world.

"Yeah!" We all said.

"What are you guys doing in LA?" She asked. Her friend had left the field.

"Well we were in town and decided to come down and watch a game." Press told her.

"You're pretty...good at crossovers, pretty good at crossovers." I told her.

Shit, I thought. Hopefully no one noticed that.

I totally noticed that. So did everyone else, since it got very quiet after that. Someone needed to break the ice, now.

"So tell us about yourself, Vanessa" I finally spoke up.

Nice save Tobs.

She smiled. Her teeth, oh my god. Her teeth were so perfect and straight. Hopefully, not like her. It's not like I would do anything though, she's 19, and I only have eyes for Baby Horse.

"Well, my name is Vanessa, I'm from Honolulu, Hawaii, I'm 19, and I have one older brother named Anthony." She said while smiling.

"What about your parents?" asked Kelley. Hope nudged her arm. "Ow" she murmured.

"Um, I don't really talk about my parents. My dad... he is in prison" She looked at the floor. "My mom, she, uh, passed away when I was fourteen."

All of our eyes widened.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry" Kelley apologized.

"No, it's okay. It was a long time ago... I should probably get going. I haven't finished my homework." She replied.

"Are you sure? We were going to get some food right now if..." Abby started.

"Yeah. It was an honor meeting all of you, and I hope I can see you all again" She smiled weakly.

"Totally!" I said.

"For sure!" Press smiled.

"Alright, bye guys!" Vanessa walked away.

"Well that was..." Alex said.

"Yeah" I muttered.

"Well when you ask her about her mom that's dead and her dad that's a criminal it sort of goes that direction." JJ stated toward Kelley.

"Back off, JJ. How was she supposed to know?"  Hope said.

JJ stayed quiet.

"Let's just go back to the hotel." I said.

"That's fine with me." Alex joked.

We got into the cars and went back to the hotel.
