Alec had changed his shirt into something Argent had, it was large and grey, just the way he liked. They drove out to the border of Beacon Hills, next to the Welcome sign. It was where the reach of the Supernatural "Beacon" from the Nemetan ended, and portals could be conjured. Just as they pulled up, the purple shimmer of a Portal was visible. Alec, Argent, and Allison leapt out. Alec was met with a strained tugging sensation as he realized how much he missed his little sister.
When long black hair was visible through the swirling vortex, Alec lost his restraint and broke into a run. Isabelle came tumbling through, her face damp, and sprinted to him. Just as they were about to reach each other, something threw them backwards from each other several feet with the pain of hitting a brick wall. Izzy cried out as she hit the ground hard, automatically rolling back into a crouching position.
Tears started pouring down her face. "No, this isn't real." She shook her head. With a cry of denial she threw herself at Alec, but was once again thrown back. He ran towards her but met the mystical barrier with similar resistance.
"No!" Blood poured from her nose as it shattered against the wall. Then their were strong arms pulling her back from Alec. Jace. Alec hadn't even seen him come through the Portal.
"Shhh, Izzy. He is right there. Trust me, we will figure this out." Her fingers dug into his hunting jacket.
"Alec?" His voice cracked.
Alec reached to his face, shocked at the tears that streamed from his eyes. "Jace, what is this?"
"I-I don't know." He pressed his palm toward Alec, but it was as if he was touching unbreakable glass.
Argent reached Alec and pressed on his elbow, pushing him up. Alec whipped his head around. "What are you doing?!"
Argent leaned close and hissed into his ear. "Your sister thought you were dead. I lost my own sister and, even though we weren't close, it broke me. Talk to her."
You could see the realization dawn on Alec. "Iz?"
"No. You died. I must be hallucinating, demon poison perhaps. I could be dying too. Is that it? Is this the barrier to heaven?'
"No Izzy, its really me. I am still alive." He knelt down and leaned his forehead against the barrier.
A squeak escaped her lips, proving she was at her most vulnerable moment. "Alec?"
He gave a weak laugh. "Hey sister." She crawled away from Jace and pressed her body against him on the other side of the wall. There was about an inch of leeway, but for them it was enough.
"Dad, can we get through?" Allison finally spoke. Argent looked up from the Lightwood's.
"Let's find out." He shot out his arm and sighed in relief when he passed right out of the Nemetans reach.
Isabelle had finally found her composure and stood. "What if it is because we are Nephilin?" She cocked her head to the side, her eyes still red.
Alec rose with her. "Then how did I get trapped in here?"
"And what about our Mark?" Jace glanced at Alec. "It was the worst thing I had ever felt, and would never like to feel it again. According to Maryse, it proved you were dead. The only other possibility is if you had become a Silent Brother." He tugged his clothes away to reveal a white shimmering parabatai rune.
Alec shook his head, pulling at Argents shirt that he now wore. "Mine is still black."
"But-thats not possible. Is it?" Isabelle looked through at Alec.
"You need to contact the Clave."
Allison nodded. "I am calling Deaton. He is our resident wiseman on things like this." She stepped through to Isabelle. "I am Allison, by the way." She extended her hand.
Isabelle vigorously shook it. "Isabelle, but you can call me Izzy. Thank you for saving my brothers life."
Allison grinned. "Any time."
While Jace contacted the Clave, everyone caught up with one another.
"So hunters only go after Downworlder? Werewolves and such?" Isabelle asked.
"Yeah. You guys fight demons though, that is awesome. To bad we use guns, that whip looks awesome."
"How can you only use guns?"
"Well, I have a bow that I frequent."
At this, Alec straightened up from where he stood near Isabelle. "You are an archer?"
She glanced at him. "Yes. Compound."
The faintest of smiles flickered across his face. "Recurve."
Allison had no sullen reputation to upkeep so she grinned from ear to ear. "Awesome."
Almost a half an hour before this exchange Maryse and Robert had come through. There had been tears, but the loss of Alec hadn't affected them as drasticly as it had Isabelle. Deaton had arrived and passed through the Nemetan barrier so that he could converse with the Concil members. Together they had reached the conclusion that people with Angel Blood, or  Nephilim, could not cross the barrier.

The Nemetan kept Beacon Hills a supernatural hot zone, and for some reason, did not want any of the Shadowhunters to enter, as a possible threat to its mystic population. The only thing that was still a question was why or how Alec was on the other side of the barrier.

They also attempted to bring angel items through, such as a stele or seraph blade, but the person holding them wasn't able to pass through. The Consul had arrived and inspected Alec's parabatai rune in imense interest. Anceint Shadowhunter texts refered to a great tree that dispeled angelic interferance, but none had ever been on the other side. Alec's Marks had no affect on him now, and without his stele, he was powerless.

"I think I know." Deaton spoke up.

Everyone turned to him in excitment. The Argents had set up a tent and lit a fire, so they all sat under it.

"There is an old saying about magic bonds: 'One cannot be split in mind'. What if through some powerful force Mr. Lightwood became bonded to the Nemetan, thus releasing his parabatai bond?"

"So I am stuck here? I am tied to   this-this-tree?" Alec asked in desperation.

"Until we can figure out how to reverse the effects, yes."
