For the past week I have tried every. Single. Thing. That came into my mind to get the secret out of my mum. I was so close to just straight out asking her to tell me even though I knew she would act like she didn't know what I was talking about.
I was walking around, talking to Connor about what we could try next when two guards walked up to me. "Ms Collins. Please follow us." I looked at Connor confused. What do they want? I nodded my head and followed them.
They brought me into a small room and locked the door. I looked around the room, trying to figure out what was going on. All the walls were grey in colour and a few lights lit up the place. After close observations I could see tiny cameras at the sides of the room. I put on a façade like I was just looking around, not showing that I knew that the cameras were there.
A few moments later, the door opened again and my mum walked in. She immediately ran to me, giving me a big hug. I was shocked for a moment. My mum rarely showed signs of affection. I returned the motion. "What's wrong? Why are we here?" I asked her, a little panicked. "You're going out of the camp." She said. Out. My mind flashed back to what I saw the day we came. No. I don't want to become what they became. No! I don't want to die!
"It's okay. I'll miss you." My mum said, tears flowing down her face, pulling me into a big hug. Her hands were hidden behind my waist-long hair. I felt her tapping on my back with a finger. A code message. 13. 25. Swipe. 4. 9. 1. 18. 25.
I followed the alphabetical order, just like my mum taught me. My Diary. She pressed her lips next to my ear and spoke into my hair in a soft whisper that was barely audible. "Find it. My room. Stay safe, Clary."
The guards walked in and pulled me with them. The last thing I saw was my mum smiling at me to stay brave, her love for me conveyed through those brown eyes. A tear rolled down her cheek. I love you, mom. I thought before being dragged away.
I was led down the corridor and to where a group of kids were waiting. I was confused at first. Why were there so many of us? The engines in my mind worked its magic. There was limited food. If they didn't have to feed the kids, then there would be more food. They were kicking us out because they're going to run out food.
I saw Connor standing there, talking to another kid. After I joined them, we were led together down another corridor.
"Hi, my name is Kaeyla." A girl next to me said. I smiled at her, shaking her outstretched hand. "I'm Clarissa. Call me Clary." I looked at Kaeyla. She looked about 15, my age. She had curly strawberry blond hair that stopped in the middle of her back and sparkling blue eyes that stood out on her face. Her skin was pale and the freckles on her face were clearly seen.
"Hey..." I heard Connor's voice. I turned to look at where it came from. "Hey... You know what's going on don't you?" I said, reading his expression. He nodded. "I think we should stick together, makes it easier to survive outside. At least there are some people we trust." I nodded my head. "At least I packed weapons before they took me. I actually have a gun, 5 daggers, 3 knives on me right now." I whispered to him. He looked at me dumbfounded and I laughed. "What? You can't expect me to be alright in this new weird environment. Especially after what our mums were talking about the other day, can you?" He just nodded his head. "Your expression was priceless!" I said, giggling a little, trying to lighten up the mood.
The guards led us to two doors about five metres apart, guards lining up in front of it. The guards in front of the door moved away and let us through. The door opened to reveal another wall of guards on the other side. The guards pushed us out the door and into the open. I haven't been out there in so long I missed it but-my mind flashed back to the man and woman- it's too dangerous. The disease. It could spread. I didn't want that to happen to me. Or anybody I knew.
