Chapter 5
LUCAS
"Yow L, d'ya think Coach is there?", Ty asked me worriedly as we walked towards the gym.
Coach Morrison usually comes fifteen minutes before the practice time.
"If you're five minutes early, then you're on time. If you're on time, then you're late."
That's his number one rule when it comes to attendance.
I checked my watch to see that we arrived at the gym three minutes early.
My teammates were changing into their practice jerseys. Dan, James and Max were already there doing some shooting.
Their attention suddenly focused on us, eyes wide opened, balls still seized in their hands.
I could sense trouble here.
Just when a hoarse voice echoed coming from behind us.
It came from a silhouette of a man slowly pacing out the dugout. It was visible to where we were standing.
"15 suicides, Lucas and Tyreke. Each!".
It was Coach's.
Bad timing. I was really not in the mood to do suicides. Shooting, that was all I want to do right now.
Trying my luck with Coach, I dashed towards him and immediately spoke, "But Coach!", I complained.
On the other hand, Ty had already started his sprints, smirking at me as he shook his round black head. The team mimicked him in silent laughter. He was such an ass to make fun of me in front of my team.
"Do you want another 10?", Coach added.
"Easy Coach! Of course not. . .", I quickly replied.
I ended up stretching my arms in the air and legs for warm up.
Simultaneously, I looked back on Ty and the rest, eyeing them like it was their last day on earth. They just scoffed.
We finished the suicides in roughly eight minutes.
Completely warmed up, Coach called us to join the practice.
We did some passing, ball handling, weaves, footwork and some individual defensive drills.
Our training was filled with drills, drills, and more drills.
Coach gave us a water break just to wet our lips and whistled long and loud for our scrimmage. Ty joined the first team with Dan and James while I joined the other with Max. And the practice continued.
After almost an hour of balling, as expected, our team won by five points.
Though, it was, undeniably, a tight match.
Everybody was in their perfect playing condition. Yet, we were very tired and completely exhausted. Our tongues almost fell off the ground.
Coach whistled for huddle and suddenly snarled, "We didn't make the State Championship last year. Let's do all our best this year! Let's win our first game on Tuesday! On three, Tigers. 1, 2, 3."
"Tigers!!!", the whole team growled.
Our basketball practice is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after our classes. If we don't have practice, we usually hang out at Dan's or James'.
