Having almost forgotten Ricky was there, Laura banged her fist on the door and burst into tears. He was better understanding of the situation now. Whilst Laura had been upstairs, Aidan had introduced himself. Though failing to tell him in which capacity he knew her, Ricky had gauged from Laura's reaction that it had been a negative one. He was sure she'd introduced herself as Laura Martin yesterday. The word Turner had never been mentioned.
He walked up behind her. Sensing him being there, Laura turned and embraced him. Burying her face into his chest as her tears flowed. She felt his arms hold her tightly. A man she'd known for little more than 24 hours showing her more compassion than many had done for a while. And once again in less than an hour she found herself uttering the words to him, "I'm sorry."
Ricky placed his hand on the back of her head and rubbed her hair. He was overwhelmed with emotion. Who was this woman that had made him feel so safe in the meeting yesterday, so amused whilst they'd been sat on Primrose Hill, yet now all he wanted to do was protect her? She'd raised her head as she'd apologised to him, completely unnecessarily. He'd wanted to cup her face. To press his lips to hers. No...it was the wrong time. She needed him for support at this moment. Not taking advantage of her.
Breathing in deeply and trying to regain some composure, Laura let her arms fall from around his body. How dare she, she thought to herself, presume this man wanted her laying all her troubles on him. He must think she was mad. She had a responsibility to him. She was his producer. He didn't need this from her. What sort of impression was she giving him?
Grabbing a tissue from the kitchen she wiped her eyes. Neither of them had spoken for a moment. Neither quite knowing what to say. Laura turned to him. Her eyes puffy and red. "What must you think of me?"
Ricky raised his arms then dropped them to his side in defeat. "I'm sorry I couldn't do anything more... "
"No. I'm just grateful you were here. But please, "she wiped her eyes once more "you must go now. You've got better things to be doing on a Saturday."
"I can't leave you like this." He reached out and placed his hand on her arm. Laura blinked at him, not quite knowing how to react.
'Professional at all times,' she told herself. They were about to work together. She should just thank him and be insistent that he left. But she couldn't. She wanted to let him get closer. No one had made her feel like this in a long time. At that moment Ricky's phone began to ring. He picked it up and seeing who it was explained to Laura that he ought to answer it. Saved by the bell.
Laura stood at the sink washing up the mugs. She hadn't heard what Ricky had said on the phone, she wasn't listening. Now he walked back to her, the moment had passed. Making sure she'd placed a smile on her face, Laura turned from the sink to Ricky.
"Something has come up. I need to be making a move." he sounded apologetic.
"Of course. That's fine...honestly, I'll be quite alright." Ricky didn't believe what she was saying. It had not yet been 5 minutes since she was crying in his arms.
"Well, I'll see you next Sunday then," he stood in front of Laura, not quite knowing how to end this meeting.
"Yes, next Sunday. Don't be late!" she tried to tease him. But her heart wasn't in it.
Ricky made his way to the door. "Look after that leg." He opened the door.
"I will. I'll go and have a bath now. I think that will help." She held the door open for him, "Thanks for this morning." And to her surprise, Ricky leant forward and kissed her cheek.
"You take care." And with that he left the house. Laura watched him go and waved as he reached the end of the path and jogged across the road.
After taking a bath there was only one thing Laura wanted to do, see her best friend. Luckily she was free. They arranged to meet at a coffee shop in Camden that afternoon.
