There was a knock at the door. Prompt as usual. Katie was stood on the door step with a bottle of wine and a variety of bags of chocolate treats in her hand. She beamed at Laura. Having not heard from her friend for a number of days, Katie was excited to hear the latest instalment of Laura's life that was, to be honest, more exciting than hers.
As soon as they were settled with a glass of wine, Katie began her interrogation.
"Right Missy, you are to tell me everything and no leaving out the slightest detail! How's the leg by the way?" Katie looked down at Laura's ankle.
"Much better. I've really rested it. I've done as I'm told."
"A trip down to Cornwall... really resting it?" Katie looked doubtful.
"It was, except for going out for a meal or two." Laura insisted.
"And there was no other exercise?" There was a glint in Katie's eye as she asked, and watching Laura take a large gulp of her wine she said, "I'll take that as a yes. Laura Martin! I do believe you have officially moved on from that bastard of an ex-husband of yours!" Katie saw the look on Laura's face change. "What?" she said. Laura put down her wine glass. Katie put her hand to her forehead. "No Laura, please tell me he's not still in your head!"
"Worse than that. I saw him again on Wednesday." Katie's mouth dropped open. "It was the most ridiculous situation," Laura continued, "We'd gone out for lunch to this pub in a village on the coast. We saw all the film location trucks... We should have turned round and gone back to Ricky's then, but I didn't think in a million years he'd be there. Like Ricky said, they're always filming stuff somewhere in Cornwall." Laura breathed in deeply. Katie's head was shaking. "Oh don't look at me like that," Laura told her friend.
"What will it take for you to see that man is poison for you? Tell me nothing happened with him." Katie sounded desperate.
"No of course not. He just came over to say hello, but Katie it was the way he held my hand when he realised I was injured." Katie pursed her lips as she listened. "He sounded so concerned. And he said that now the divorce was settled we should try to,"
"Now stop right there," Katie had heard enough. "What planet are you on Laura that you could think having contact with Aidan would not in some way lead to you being hurt? Again?"
"He can't hurt me now, we're divorced."
"That has got to be the most stupid thing I have ever, ever heard you say Laura." Katie sat on the edge of the sofa.
"I just thought it might be nice to get to know him again now that the divorce is settled."
"Nice," Katie interrupted, "Nice is a glass of Pimms on a hot day. Nice is a long, hot bath. Nice is not getting back with the man who ruined your life for years." She was more stern than Laura had heard her be in a long while. But she lightened her tone. "Look Laura, I completely understand," she lied to appease Laura, " You've got a history there. He's been a large part of your life. But it has to be time to move on. What about Ricky? "
"What about Ricky?" Laura sounded confused as if Ricky didn't even come in to the equation.
"If you're thinking of taking Aidan back then why are you..." she stopped. "You're not being fair to Ricky."
Laura thought about what Katie was saying, " I have no intention of hurting Ricky. He's like a breath of fresh air to me. And I'm certainly not taking Aidan back. I just think that maybe I just could just...Oh I don't know what I am saying anymore. Just seeing him again. His mood was so different from when he came round here that day. Look, I probably won't see him again anyway. I deleted his number from my phone a long time ago. He thinks I'm with Ricky, so he won't try anything."
