By the time Friday came, Laura was ready for a good night out. She hadn't seen Ricky again. Why should she? She didn't expect to see other work colleagues every day. He had been in the office, but just not at the same time as Laura. She hadn't seen him when she was jogging and they hadn't swapped numbers. From being so excited to meet someone last weekend, she had once again spent the week feeling somewhat lonely. But tonight she was going out. She and Chris had arranged to meet on the last carriage of the first train from Hampstead after 6:30.
Laura stood on the platform at Chalk Farm. Stamping her feet occasionally to keep warm, she heard the familiar rumble of the train heading out of the tunnel. The rush of the breeze signalled it's arrival. Laura watched as the train slowed, looking in at the windows of the carriage. The doors opened and at the beginning of the final carriage Laura saw Chris' face appear smiling at her. She ran along the platform and got on to the train.
"Hi." He kissed her, "You OK?"
"Yes, hello, yes I'm good thank you. Quite excited." Laura sat down next to Chris, looking round at the few people on the train. Who else was on their way to the gig, she wondered.
"How are you anyway?" she asked Chris, "The show is sounding great by the way."
"I'm good. Yes I'm pleased with the show. A few teething problems. We've made changes already, but a week in and I'm loving it. Ask me again in a month."
"It must be strange after such a long break." Laura thought of what she'd heard about him spending time in America during his break.
"It is, but it's in my blood. I've been doing this since I was a teenager."
"That's really to be admired. You given your life to something you love." Laura wondered if she'd had her time again, would she make any changes. " Are you looking forward to tonight? Or more so tomorrow morning and not having to get up early."
"It'll be a great night. And yes, a lie in is definitely on the cards. You seen them before?"
"Yes, many, many years ago."She told him getting comfy in her seat. "We're changing at London Bridge?"
"Yeah, that's the quickest way. Look I've booked a car to come home if you don't fancy slumming it on the tube."
That was music to Laura's ears, " If that's alright."
"Of course it is. I think a few other friends will be joining us too." Chris explained. He paused, " It's a shame Ricky couldn't make it." He looked to see Laura's reaction.
She didn't give him one. She just put her lips together and said, "Mmmmmm." She was giving nothing away.
"I think he said he was out on a date." Chris said nonchalantly. Laura's face whipped round to look at him. He was smiling.
"That was cruel!" Laura told him, knowing exactly why he'd said it.
"Made you look though. So Ricky told me you went out again on Sunday. Chris' eyebrows were raised as if to say 'tell me more'.
"I wouldn't say we went 'out'. We just sat in a pub talking, getting to know each other."
"So Ricky will be meeting up with Stefan and Matt next Sunday then?" he already knew the answer. "Getting to know them!" There was only play in his voice Laura could tell.
"We were getting to know each other." She repeated. "Like I got to know you the other night." She'd said her piece. There was silence for a moment.
Chris sat nodding his head as if listening to an imaginary song. He twisted his mouth to one side like he was trying to stop himself from saying something. Laura ignored him at first, starring out of the window at the blackness of the tunnel. The train began to slow as it entered the next station. She watched Chris' reflection. Seeing how painful he was finding it to keep quiet.
