Okay, so it is is currently around 2 am over here and I'm a little tired, so I'm probably going to bed after writing this, but I just want to express annoyance briefly.
So a little more than a year ago, my cousin started smoking cigarettes. He's 17 now. At the time, I thought, you know, it's not a healthy thing, but he could be doing worse stuff. Anyway, being the bright gem he is, he often posted pictures of him smoking with his friends on his snapchat story, which is how I found out. A few months later we visited them, and when we were alone he started asking me if I'd ever done drugs and if I wanted to try it, which is also when he told me that he had started smoking weed.
At this point I was mildly concerned about him. He had at that time also recently turned 16 which meant that he was now legally allowed to drink beer and wine, which he drank very frequently, and not only beer, but also spirits that you technically aren't allowed to drink until you're 18. He was going down a pretty dark road, and he still continued posting pictures and videos on snapchat.
Now, I've grown apart with my cousins over the past few years, but it's obvious that he's going no through some shit. I think he probably has a pretty low self esteem and in order to be deemed cool by his little group of friends he does drugs. Okay, maybe he has some mental health issues, and that's his way of crying for help. The problem? My aunt and uncle don't seem to be doing anything.
Flash forward to this month: he has started dragging his younger brother into it as well. (He posted a picture of both of them on snapchat, smoking something. I'm not very familiar with drugs tbh) now, my younger cousin is two years younger than my older cousin. His grades are pretty decent at school, and he attends a good school. Why is he doing drug as well then? As far as I'm aware, he didn't seem to have the same kind of problems as his older brother, so my assumption is that he thinks it's cool because his big bro is doing it too.
Flash forward to today: in his snapchat story today he had a picture of something that to me looks like a more serious drug. It was like, colourful pills. And then he proceeded to update it regularly with pictures and videos to some sort of party he was at where they were listening to rap music that was quite shockingly sexist (as well as Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots), and snorting cocaine. (If that is the one you snort, of course... I think it is, but maybe I'm confusing it with something else? Because I'm also thinking that you smoke it? Can you do both?)
At this point, I'm really worried about him. You know, he used to look out for me when I was little, and he was a nice guy. He had a good future ahead of him. Okay, he isn't super intelligent, but he's not stupid either. And he was always really good at sports. Now I imagine drugs and alcohol quite affect your body, and that it's not very good, especially if you're an athlete. He's destroying his life, and I want to help but I don't know what to do. Do his parents not realise how fucked up he is? The kid needs help, and I just want to give him a hug, and tell him that some of the stuff he says is very sexist, but it's okay as long he realises that he shouldn't have said that stuff and starts understanding feminism. I just want him to be okay again, and not struggle the way he's currently struggling, and I want him to find better friends because his friends are the ones that dragged him into this mess in the first place. God I feel bad for him, and I'm worried about him.
