Chapter 4Alphas and Omegas
~ 15 players remaining ~
Two years before that night I sat alone in the attic, crying my eyes out and trying to breathe through all the dust and chest racking sobs, I came to the realization I was transgender. I wasn't some pretty girl, I wasn't Brooklyn Reed. Every time I tried to tell myself that I was; everything felt wrong. I wanted to cut my hair, but my sister refused since my "beauty" was timeless. So I was stuck with curls that I hated and wanted to rip out. I stopped wearing makeup, I wore more sports bras, and bigger shirts so my chest was less visible. Viola of course told me to act more like a lady, and that my new tomboyish behavior wasn't proper. For awhile? I hated her, because she was holding me back from who I was, constantly insisting I should be more like a girl. Because I was a girl. Finn, the other Transboy in our friend group, knew. He took me aside one day and asked me, and through my happy tears I explained how thankful I was to have one person supporting me. Finn got me a chest binder for my birthday, and that's why he gave it to me in secret. My name is Bradley, not Brooke. Finn knows this, and called me B for the time being.
How Abigail knew was beyond me. Alice didn't know, so she couldn't have told her about it. But still, I was terrified. How many of my secrets did she know? She knew many, I can tell you that.
Gathering my strength after bawling my eyes out in the attic, I left. The floor below me was where our base was, and I planned on taking a nap before going out again. Tobi ran into me as I was coming down the hall, and she smiled. "There you are." She chuckled, walking towards me. Her smile began to vanish as she saw my tear stained face and bloodshot eyes. "...Hey..what happened? Are you okay?" I shook my head, wanting to tell her everything but knowing if I did, it would only cause drama. "Abigail, we just talked for a bit is all.." I muttered, closing my eyes. Tobi gently held my face and wiped it clean of tears, then she rubbed my temples to rid me of my headache. "Did she hurt you?"
"No...I was just scared." I sighed. Tobi nodded, grabbing my hand and leading me back into the safe room.Sleeping on the couch was Kumara. This was very common. She'd fall asleep for hours and then wake up and tell us about her odd dreams. Dreams that would seem to last for months, of people like us, but very mean and unforgiving. She said that they too were playing Deadlocked. She even told me that I was a guy in her dreams. If only she knew. When the door opened she stirred, beginning to wake up. "Hey Kuma, sorry to wake you.." Tobi chuckled, and Kumara shook her head. "No it's okay...I'm glad you woke me. My dream was so violent I think it was best to wake up." She sighed, rubbing her eyes. She pulled her hair into a ponytail, fixing it from the messy one it was before. "What happened this time?" I asked.
"Well..You were doing as you normally did. Insulting the rest of us and stating your dominance. But..for some reason you seemed really off...Like you were hiding something." She whispered, her eyes darting between me and Tobi. "Last we'd seen you, you both were together. So people started getting suspicious and ganging up on you for answers? Then I got angry and tried to calm everyone down but I think Nat punched you so I decided to sit down and wake up."Her dreams, little did we know...were not dreams at all. But that is another story for another day.
I shivered, hugging my arms to my body and leaning back into the couch. "You said they're like us right? How so..?"
"We all look so similar to them, well a few of us don't. But our names are similar." Kumara shrugged, pulling out her phone and going to her drawing app. She began to draw with her little stylist, and Tobi and I both leaned in. "I look like this, and everyone there calls me Kari." She chuckled. Kari had long reddish hair and tan skin, wore ripped jeans and a leather jacket. She looked like a total badass. "What about me?"
"You're Baily, and you're the hottest guy on earth! To be honest? If you were a dude you'd be really really hot. And I'd date you." Kumara winked, and I simply rolled my eyes. "If you didn't have such a weird crush on the chick from your dreams." I smirked, watching her face grow deep red. "I just think that my dream self is smoking okay?" We laughed for a bit, drawing together and trying to ease ourselves of any stress. Suddenly Kumara's eyes widened, and we knew what was happening now.
