Chapter 18
"You were right. She has apparently forgotten only you, Mr. Varun. Partial amensia". Dr. Rammohan broke the long awaited test results, after five hours. There were two more doctors along with Dr. Rammohan, when Riya and I were called in; they were introduced as neural specialists.
"But, doctor, why is it just Varun?", Riya asked.
Dr. Rammohan gestured towards one of the neural specialists. "Dr. Ray, will you, please?", he said.
"For me to answer that, you have to tell me who is Varun, to Pia" , Dr. Ray asked.
Riya left me to answer that. It was a complex question. The answer was easy but to phrase it in the most accurate way, was the challenging part.
"Pia is the love of my life. And so was I, to her"
Dr. Ray nodded in response. "The reason I asked this question was because I have a theory, related to the case. Your response connects the independent hypothesizes I have. Pia's memory of Varun was too strong; either excruciatingly painful, or powerful happiest memory. Her brain could not hold such strong memory, when it experienced shock. This is quite similar to how some people forget their past, or how some people loses track of just some memories from their past and when they remember it, they forget some other incidents from near past. So, in our case, Pia may or may not gain back memories associated with Varun. But, it is going to take quite a long time, before she gets them back."
"Will there be any problem when we try to bring back her memories, doctor? Or, after bringing them back?", I asked.
"I know you are referring to the headaches she is experiencing when seeing you. It is like how we say sometimes 'it is somewhere in the record but I am not getting what is it'. It is a proof that memories of you are not completely erased. It is because her brain tries to get a solid picture associated with you, from a seemingly non-existent memory. Don’t worry, she will eventually get over it. And, what happens after her memories are back, I cannot answer that part now. For now, cling on to that one little tiny ray of light signal from her brain, and try to restore back her lost memory." Dr. Ray gave an assuring smile, replacing my question marks with dots.
Riya and I thanked all three doctors and stepped out of the room; I stepped out with a new hope. When Riya said, 'you will bring her back, Varun', I gave her a fresh positive smile.
I headed towards the Sai Mandir, that Pia and I used to visit often in the past, after I left the hospital. I did not see Pia after meeting with the doctor. I decided to give her rest for the day, knowing she would not get any rest from me, in the days that followed, I smiled. It was then a new battle started in my head. I heard the voice of my conscience.
'Are you not sure you should avoid this? You know very well your parents will not give their consent for you to lead a complete life with Pia. Now, she has lost her memories about you, which is a good sign. Until this moment, you were worrying how would Pia be without you. You knew how she never lost her blind stupid hopes of walking the aisle with you. Knowing your parents, I tell you, forget about bringing her back, and start focusing on what you were trying to implement before - moving on. Because, once Pia gets back her memory, you will have to fight your parents and break their heart. But now, if you decide well, you will not break anyone's heart but just yours. You can live with it.'
My own inner voice spoke what I had forgotten, leaving me motionless.
