Chapter 3:
As soon as I got home, I told my mom and dad about me having been made the president of my department. I then buried myself in front of my laptop and started working on my project. Huh, I still didn't check with Gibran. I smacked on my forehead and checked the clock. It was half past six. Convincing myself that it was not too late to disturb a person who is out of his working hours, I dialed Gibran's number and got approval for my project, after a long discussion. What I did not expect was, he volunteered himself to be the guide for my project.
Weeks that followed were no remarkable. Time was rushing past so fast that it was already three months since the start of the term. I had only completed the design phase of my project and proceeded no further in my presidential duties. I decided it was high time I appointed heads for the various divisions of the upcoming event, Mindsurf, the Technical Symposium - I had only 2 more months left. Nishath, Austin and I agreed to call up for volunteers, before we made a final decision ourselves. I sent out a mail to the intra-department final years' group. Two weeks later, we called for a meeting with the fellow final years and pre-final years.
"Hey folks, first of all, thank you guys for your positive responses" I began. This is my first time addressing a gathering; I continued talking, ignoring my feeling on tenterhooks. "It really helped us narrow down our search, but was equally difficult to arrive at a single selection, as all who volunteered seemed potential enough for the post." Kiran me a 'thumbs up' sign when I looked at her; I proceeded with lesser jitters.
"We will have one student from fourth year responsible for an event each, and one from third year as second-in-command. The coordinators of each event will work with their respective faculty in-charge in filtering and nomination, jury panel selection and theme selection processes for their event. Let me read out the list". I began reading.
"So, this will be the final council for Mindsurf this year. I will have this student council list stuck on the department notice board. The event organizers can pick student volunteers for their event from second and first years. And that is all from my end. The student council, which includes the three of us too," I gestured at Nishath and Austin, "will meet up once in two weeks to track the progress. So that's it for now. We will meet again on Oct 15th. If any change in plan, I will let you guys know." Delegation of tasks seemed simple. But how good will be the delegates in getting the job done neatly, only the fortnight meetings will decide.
Next day began the same way like any other day. But, when I boarded the bus to college, there she was, Pia. She was in a sky blue dress, fiddling with her mobile, earphones locked in her ear. She had left her hair loose which was falling on her shoulder and wind was sweeping it gently. When she looked up at me as she turned accidentally, I felt my eyes getting glued to her kohl adorned eyes. She looked pretty today. Neither of us could break that contact. Few seconds later, we turned our faces with half hidden smile. As if going with the situation, when I turned on the music player in my phone, 'Boli si surat' song began to play.
I met up with Varun Mishra as soon as I entered my department block. "Hey Varun, conquering juniors' hearts now? Why do you have to be insufferably handsome?", he said. I had no idea what he was that about. "Not in the very morning Varun. C ya later", I cut him off before he babbled on any further.
Two weeks later, after the first council meeting, I saw Pia and one of her friends talking to Kiran. Seeing me done with the meeting, Kiran beckoned me, "Varun, this is Pia and Tanisha, from second year. They like to be volunteers for Symposium activities, but are little clueless"
"Well, you could take a look at the list in the notice board and contact the respective coordinator. They should be able to drive you. So, which event would you like to be a part of?" I asked.
"We have no much idea. This is our first time being a part of Symposium. So, we thought if you could help us." , Pia spoke to me for the first time.
"Hmmm." Just then Priyamvada passed by me. "Priya, I have two volunteers from second year here. Will they be able to help you?"
"Oh yeah Varun, thanks that would be great. I will brief them their duties." Priya signed me off and took away Pia and her friend.
"Hey Kiran, she is the girl I told u about few days back.", I smiled with a wink.
"Really? Who in the two?" Kiran asked, her eyes sparkling with mixture of mischief and curiosity.
"The girl in yellow dress. It has been long since I spent some time with my only friend. How about catching up after college?" I said.
Kiran was taken aback by that sudden invite from me, and just gave a nod with a look of amusement. I smiled and signed her off "So, see ya after college then. Wait for me in the bus stop"
