Chapter 7
Pia remained speechless for few minutes after I completed seeding her my imagination. I was not good at expressing or explaining, but I felt I did a fairly good job, portraying the image. But I was beginning to worry if I said something too far, when she finally spoke.
"Varun…"
She just spoke my name, so softly and huskily, that I felt her presence more stronger. I felt like I was given wings when she said my name. I did not understand what was there in the way she said my name, that made me feel like I never felt before.
"Remember this. Tonight, when you sleep, you'll find me beside you. Just like how you found me standing beside you now." Before I could recover from the magic she created, she spoke again and hung up. I had butterflies performing in my stomach when I lied down. I fell asleep, smiling, one arm crossed across my chest, as if I was holding an invisible cuddling figure. My sleeping posture never changed after that night.
I met Pia in the evening at the market in our locality. Mom sent me out to buy some vegetables and I used the chance to give Pia the bracelet I bought for her.
Finally, my date of joining at TCS arrived. I was feeling euphoric and thrilled of my first step in my career. I joined TCS on 1st September, at Chennai, my first time staying away from home. I had the same discomfort every Bangalore-ian faced in Chennai - weather. But, not to mention that, I made countable few new friends - Ashish, Preethi and Anusha. Anusha was a tomboy and seemed pretty good at everything. She was so shrewd and sharp and attractive and it was very hard not to befriend her. Being with her, reminded me of Pia every time. Preethi was Anusha's friend from her college, a subtle, soft-spoken girl. Ashish was a typical dude boy, fun and freaking to be with. Unlike me, all three were natives of Chennai, so I had no trouble, venturing around the city during the weekends. I called mom and Pia every day and Pia seemed to be having a busy life at college too. Although she initially had trouble coping up without having me, neither in college, nor in the city, she gradually got out of it. At the end of three months of my training, I was no more the old Varun, who sulked and withdrew from anything and everything. I got to be either with my friends, or with Pia, both zones being full of energy that was easily infectious. If there was one thing I felt reluctant about coming to Chennai , it was not being able to be with my mom. Phone calls and once in three weeks coming home, in no way did anything to keep up for the days I did not get to be with her. Finally, when the training ended, I was so glad that I was getting back to be with my mom, and even more glad, when Ashish, Anusha and Preethi, joined at Bangalore TCS, with me.
The night before I left from Chennai, I was talking to Pia. I hung up after few minutes, as I had loads to be packed, and I had an early morning train to be caught.
The next day, when I reached the station, a tall and slender figure hugged me, shouting 'Welcome back', in my ear.
Pia. She was wearing a sleeveless olive green top and a pair of jeans that showcased her long legs and slender figure elegantly. She stood beaming, running her fingers through her hair, and few strands missed the path of her fingers, fell on her face. It was three months since I last saw her and she has changed so much over the months I did not see her. She has gone little tanned and gained little weight. But she looked a more a model-like now, in her hair that has grown longer than before, that was let open and falling to her waist length. I had to stop myself from saying 'Woww'.
"Wow. Hello beautiful", said Ashish, who came right behind me, when he saw Pia. Pia picked some of my luggage, flushing pink. I did not like that either, when she blushed because of Ashish.
"All, this is Pia. Pia, this is Ashish, Anusha and Preethi." I did my introduction session en route to the exit.
"Nice meeting you guys. Varun has told me so much about you folks".
"So, you are the hot guy Varun's hot girlfriend", Ashish asked. It seemed more of a statement than a question or exclamation.
"I am not sure of the 'hot' part for me. But, I can pass as his girlfriend", Pia replied with a mischievous smile.
I halted in my path, for few seconds. What did she just call herself?! My girlfriend?!!!
